Chris McKee opens up on future plans after Linfield loan spell

Chris McKee insists he isn't ruling out a return to the Irish League after enjoying a successful loan spell with Linfield.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 striker is set to come out of contract at Rangers.

McKee - who turns 20 on Saturday - says he will sit down over the coming days to map out his next move.

Asked what the future holds, McKee told Belfast Live's That's What I Call Football podcast : "At the minute I'm not really sure, to be honest.

"Obviously since joining Linfield, I knew I had six months left on my deal at Rangers so I just wanted to get my head down, work as hard as I can and hopefully have a really good loan spell.

"And I think it turned out alright. I think my loan spell turned out rightly.

"Now I am off on my summer break, and over the next week or so I will have to sit down and have a good think about it.

"I have to work out what's best for me and then make a decision."

McKee scored six goals in 16 appearances for Linfield to help David Healy's side retain the Gibson Cup.

One of those goals came against Coleraine on the final day of the season as the Blues made it four Premiership titles on the bounce.

McKee revelled in his loan spell at his boyhood club, and believes the Irish League is an attractive proposition for any young player.

"It is definitely a possibility I could return to the Irish League," he said.

"Not just Linfield, but the whole league is on the rise. The standard of the league has gone way up and these six months have really benefitted me.

"And obviously I love playing for Linfield as well. Linfield is my club, and I love Linfield, the fans and everything about it.

"So it is a possibility I could be back. But I will just sit down and have a hard long think about it.

"But it could definitely happen."

McKee says you only have to look at the example of Blackpool striker Shayne Lavery whose career was galvanised by a spell at Linfield after playing underage football with Everton.

He also believes Trai Hume's game time in the Northern Ireland top flight was instrumental in the defender's move to Sunderland.

"Shayne came back from playing in England an got his move back. Trai Hume obviously went straight from the Irish League," McKee said.

"It is an ideal situation going from playing first-team football in the Irish League and then signing for a team across the water. Rather than signing for a youth team across the water.

"But when you get that chance at 16 I don't think anyone is going to turn it down. It really is the chance of a lifetime.

"Being at Rangers the past three or four years have really helped me and developed me, so it has been brilliant.

"Bot I feel it is now time for my career to kick on and play regular first-team football."
