Chris Hughton's Ghanaian roots explained ahead of World Cup campaign

Former Republic of Ireland international Chris Hughton is gearing up for a massive few weeks as technical advisor of Ghana.

The 51-times capped Irish international took on the role of technical director in the Spring and will hold the position until at least the end of the World Cup.

The English born Hughton played for Ireland as his mother was born there. However, the former Brighton boss has strong Ghanaian roots as well.

Hughton's father was born in Ghana and left the country in the 1950's. He ended up in Essex where Chris was born in 1958.

Now 63-years of age, Chris Hughton has been around the block a few times. During his playing career, the defender made over 300 league appearances in a 16 year career.

After retiring from football, Hughton ended up as interim manager of Tottenham Hotspur on a couple of occasions. Hughton held the role as Brian Kerr's assistant during the former St Patrick man's spell in charge of the National side.

After that, Hughton had spells as manager in charge of Birmingham, Norwich and Brighton. His most recent role in management was as Nottingham Forest boss, a position he held until September 2021.

While travelling in Ghana with his family earlier this year, Hughton found himself linked with the National team job. And while he didn't become the manager, he is now an important figure in Ghanaian football.
