Chris Godwin: Criticism of 2023 smaller receiver prospects is unfair

Chris Godwin was a third round selection of the Bucs in the 2017 draft.

Recently, the Super Bowl champ told USA Today Sports’ Mackenzie Salmon his squad can use added depth at receiver.

This year’s draft may provide the ideal opportunity for his squad to upgrade the position.

But while this draft doesn’t appear to be loaded with blue chip receiver prospects, (due in some part to the diminutive size of the top prospects), Godwin feels criticism levied against smaller wideouts as a whole is unwarranted.

Instead of size, Godwin said, he just looks to see if “they can play or not.”

Godwin, who registered a blistering 4.4 at the Combine six years ago, also discounted the judging of receivers strictly based on speed.

“You can run a 4.2, but if you don’t know how to use your brakes then you are just going to be running go’s (go routes),” said Godwin. “Teams are smart enough to stop that. You have to be a well-rounded receiver.”

And in this draft Godwin sees some players who fit the bill.

“What I have seen so far, there’s some guys in this class that can really make plays,” said the 2019 Second-team All-Pro.
