Chris Ballard dismisses assumption Colts targeting one player

Over the last month or so, the Indianapolis Colts have been linked to one quarterback prospect among all others, but general manager Chris Ballard dismissed the reports that they are zeroing in on one particular player.

During his press conference ahead of the 2023 NFL draft Friday, Ballard dismissed the idea of the team targeting one player and went on to say the information hasn’t come from the Colts’ camp.

“Like there’s always this assumption that we’ve targeted one player. This is the main assumption right now that we have targeted one guy to go get. I don’t know if that’s an accurate assumption,” Ballard told reporters Friday. “As a matter of fact, I’d say it’s not and so I think you got to wait until the draft. Before the fact, you gotta wait until draft day and see how things unfold and then be able to react accordingly.”

The one quarterback linked to the Colts the most this offseason through the national media has been Kentucky’s Will Levis. How much of that has been smoke and how much of it has been truth is difficult to decipher, but Ballard made a point to say that misinformation is at an all-time high during this part of the offseason.

Most of those reports have come from the opinions of those outside the organizations—i.e. other general managers and coaches see that being a good fit. While that may be true to some extent, Ballard made it clear that information isn’t coming from them.

“I just always love to read the reports that the cults love this guy and they love this guy. They’re dialed in on this guy. Like, who’d that come from? It didn’t come from me. I mean, who’s it coming from? Like, who’s telling them who we love and who we don’t love? They don’t know,” Ballard said.

As frustrating as it is, we simply have to wait until the draft arrives on the night of April 27.

The selection may come down to a prospect who’s been linked all along. It may come down to a prospect who hasn’t been linked at all.

Regardless, Round 1 of the draft can’t come soon enough.
