Choo-choose Perth to be the home of the Great British Railways headquarters

The wheels have been set in motion for Perth's bid to host the Great British Railways headquarters.

Towns and cities across England, Wales and Scotland are competing to become the home of the public body responsible for running Britain's railways.

And the Fair City is throwing its name into the hat for contention.

At a special meeting of Perth and Kinross Council on February 23 Labour councillor Alasdair Bailey and independent councillor Xander McDade put forward a motion to enter Perth into the competition.

In October 2021 UK transport secretary Grant Shapps announced a competition inviting express-ions of interest from mainland British towns and cities to host the headquarters.

The move will bring jobs and investment outside of London and is part of the UK Government's commitment to levelling up

After a lengthy meeting - lasting all day - putting forward the motion Cllr Bailey said: "It's been a long day so I don't want to derail things now but before we reach the end of the line I'd be grateful if people would support my bid for the Great British Railway's headquarters to come to Perth."

Seconding, independent councillor Xander McDade said: "This is a great opportunity for Perthshire and Kinross-shire to bring high quality good paying jobs to Perth and Kinross."

Councillors unanimously supported the motion. Perth and Kinross Council will now submit its express-ion of interest before the March 16 deadline.

The Great British Railways transition team will then draw up a shortlist of the best applications in May. It will then go to a public vote to choose the winner.
