Celtic have reportedly gazumped Mainz’s offer for Cho Gue-sung.
Ange Postecoglou is seeking another forward option after contract talks between Giorgos Giakoumakis and the club stalled, with the Greek striker reportedly close to joining Urawa Red Diamonds. Gue-sung has been on Celtic’s radar for a while but he earned new admirers after a good showing for South Korea during the World Cup in Qatar.
It had been thought that German Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 were leading the race for his signature after making an offer of £2.7million to Jeonbuk Hyundai motors for his services. But Football Scotland are now reporting that Celtic have entered the race with a bid of their own and it’s higher than the one submitted by Mainz, catapulting them to the front of the queue. Jeonbuk are reluctant to lose their star man, but are negotiating with interest in the player from across Europe and MLS.
Former Manchester United favourite Ji Sung Park is Jeonbuk’s technical director, and is currently in London negotiating on behalf of the K League side. Reports in Asia claim that Mainz have now cooled their interest in Gue-sung, leaving the Hoops with a clear run at signing the golden boy of the South Korean national team.
