Matildas midfielder Chloe Logarzo has celebrated her 29th birthday in style by scoring the winner in Western United's 1-0 victory over A-League Women leaders Perth.
Later on Friday night women's World Cup hero Cortnee Vine salvaged a 1-1 draw for Sydney FC against Brisbane, cancelling out Ashlee Brodigan's early goal.
Fellow Matilda Tameka Yallop limped off in added time and the Roar will hope it is just cramp, not a calf injury.
Logarzo's goal in the 18th minute proved enough to best the Glory at City Visa Recreation Reserve and lift Western to fifth on the table.
For United and coach Kat Smith, it was the perfect response to last week's 4-2 loss to Newcastle, while Perth will rue a missed opportunity to consolidate top spot in their second defeat of the season.
The hosts dominated shots 22-8 (six on target to two) despite the Glory controlling the bulk of possession.
Fringe Matilda Logarzo has enjoyed an impressive start to this campaign, after her first season back in the ALW proved an injury-ravaged affair.
Western's co-captain has thrived in a more advanced role this season, scoring three goals while reaching 90 minutes in six consecutive games.
Perth started brightly with their hard-working press troubling United and in the 16th minute, in-form striker Millie Farrow burst past multiple players only to drag her shot wide.
The home side took the lead two minutes later when Mel Taranto cleverly slipped Logarzo through and she rifled a well-taken shot into the bottom corner for the game's only goal.
"Under my tenure, so far, she's really embracing everything. She's really driving the standards," Smith said.
"I'm really pleased that she can get on the scoresheet for her birthday.
"But obviously it goes without saying the impact that she has on the players around her and what she carries as a as a selfless leader."
At Leichhardt Oval, Brisbane took the lead in the 12th minute when Sharn Freier slipped through Brodigan on the edge of the box.
The former Jet unleashed a powerful strike that beat Jada Whyman at her near post.
In the 24th minute, the Roar appealed for handball when Hollie Palmer's shot appeared to catch the arm of Shay Hollman but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
Sydney equalised in the 42nd when Fenton went on a daring move down the left flank, dropping the shoulder to beat a defender before whipping a clever ball into the mixer, where Vine athletically toepoked home.
In the 58th minute, Vine went on a wonderful jinking run but blasted her shot over the bar.
From there, neither team could find an opening as Yallop limped off.
The Sky Blues sit sixth with two games in hand, while Brisbane are eighth.
