Chinese Premier Li Qiang's recent four-day visit to Australia aimed to mend long-strained relations between the two countries. However, an incident during a press briefing has once again brought attention to the tensions between China and Australia.
During a press event where Li and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed cooperative agreements, a Chinese embassy employee reportedly attempted to block an Australian reporter, Cheng Lei, from the cameras. Cheng, who was detained in China for over three years before her release in 2023, described the incident as an attempt to prevent any discordant voices or controversial presence.
Multiple media outlets confirmed the details of the incident, highlighting the challenges faced by journalists in China's controlled media environment. Beijing has been criticized for its tight control over information and arbitrary detentions, including Cheng's case and that of Australian writer Yang Hengjun.
Despite the incident, the visit also saw positive developments, such as China's pledge to provide a new pair of giant pandas to the Adelaide Zoo and adding Australia to its visa-waiver program. The leaders also agreed on greater military communication, following recent tensions like a Chinese fighter jet firing flares at an Australian helicopter.
The visit, which marked the highest-level trip by a Chinese official to a US-allied country in seven years, aimed to stabilize the relationship between China and Australia. Both leaders emphasized mutual respect and cooperation, signaling potential progress in trade and security issues.
