China warns USA will bear 'serious consequences' for Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan

China's defence ministry has warned the US that it must bear "serious consequences" for Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last week.

Senior Democrat and House Speaker Pelosi headed to Taipei in solidarity against China's "autocracy".

But the Chinese defence ministry has now accused the US of instigating the tension between itself and Taiwan, insisting that there must be retaliation, according to Reuters.

Defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said in an online post: "The current tense situation in the Taiwan Strait is entirely provoked and created by the U.S. side on its own initiative, and the US side must bear full responsibility and serious consequences for this.

"The bottom line cannot be broken, and communication requires sincerity."

China spent four days conducting unprecedented military training drills across the Taiwan Strait, which some believed to be a flexing of its muscles.

The drills were scheduled to end on Sunday, August 7, but there's been no confirmation that's the case.

It also decided to formally cut off defence policy talks with the US on Friday, just as Ms Pelosi left Taiwan.

Washington DC condemned the move to ditch negotiations, claiming it was an irresponsible reaction.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's defence ministry revealed it sent aircraft and ships to "appropriately" react to Chinese training drills on Sunday morning, August 7.

Some Chinese ships and planes crossed the unofficial border between the two countries over the weekend, Taiwan claimed.

A White House spokesperson said: "These activities are a significant escalation in China's efforts to change the status quo. They are provocative, irresponsible and raise the risk of miscalculation.

"They are also at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, which is what the world expects."

China and Taiwan had a complicated relationship even before the latest tensions.

The Chinese see Taiwan as a breakaway province, and reportedly want to regain its control.

But, Taiwan is an established self-governing country with its own president and cabinet.
