China unveils space robot to help build lunar base

  • China has unveiled a wheeled humanoid robot designed to play a crucial role in constructing a lunar research station by 2035.
  • The robot is intended to perform various tasks, including assembling infrastructure, transporting materials, collecting samples, and maintaining equipment on the Moon before human astronauts arrive.
  • Developed by the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering, it features a humanoid upper body for manipulation and a wheeled base, chosen for its stability, speed, and energy efficiency in the lunar environment.
  • Its advanced capabilities include a 180-degree rotating waist, a four-degree-of-freedom hand for precise tasks, stereo cameras for depth perception, and seven-degree-of-freedom arms.
  • Scientists opted for a wheeled design over bipedal walking due to the latter's mechanical complexity, risk of falling, and high energy consumption, making the wheeled robot more practical for long-term lunar operations.
