What’s new: China’s top climate envoy Xie Zhenhua spoke to his U.S. counterpart John Kerry via video Wednesday when they agreed to maintain communication to address climate change challenges together, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
The two sides discussed joint efforts to work on the global climate problem in a multilateral manner, the ministry said in a statement Thursday.
Xie and Kerry also exchanged views on implementing the consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden in Bali last November when the two leaders agreed to work together to address global issues, including climate change.
The background: Xie and Kerry spoke on the sidelines of the COP27 United Nations climate summit in Egypt last November, according to Bloomberg.
China suspended official climate talks with the U.S. last August as one of its countermeasures to then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
