A high-ranking official at China’s Ministry of Commerce is likely to become a vice finance minister, Caixin has learned from multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.
Guo Tingting, a vice commerce minister, is expected to fill the position to be left by Zhu Zhongming, who has been named a deputy chief of Shanghai’s Communist Party committee.
Guo has spent much of her career at the Ministry of Commerce. In recent years, she has been on the career fast track, receiving several promotions, sources close to the ministry told Caixin.
Guo became an assistant minister in 2022 before being appointed a vice minister that year, public information shows.
She oversees the ministry’s finance department, the sources said. The department’s responsibilities include crafting tax and fiscal policies related to the commercial sector and managing central government funds designated to promote the sector’s development.
She also oversees the department of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao affairs, the sources said. She has led the implementation of the free trade agreements that aim to enhance economic ties between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, as well as Macao, they said.
