Chilwell school forced to open late as another traveller encampment set up on fields

A Nottinghamshire school said it would open later than normal so it can evict a group of travellers from its site. Chilwell School on Queens Road West has been impacted by another traveller encampment being set up this weekend (July 1-2).

The school said its premises team and business manager had been in contact with Nottinghamshire Police. It added an eviction notice had been issued to those encamped.

But the school has been forced into starting the day at 10am, in a bid to reduce disruption. "Parents and students may already be aware that the school has faced an unauthorised encampment over this weekend," Chilwell School said on its website.

"Thanks to our premises team and business manager, we have been in ongoing communication with the police and the camp has been issued with a legal responsibility to vacate the land. We anticipate that this will be complete by first thing tomorrow morning but to ensure that there is reduced disruption to the start of school, we are moving the start of the day to 10am."

A school representative confirmed the trespassers were still on the site at 8am on Monday, July 3, adding it would "most likely" be resolved before 10am. Last month Chilwell School said a gate padlock had been broken before travellers moved onto the field on Sunday, June 18.

A representative explained it had hoped to serve an eviction notice and move the vehicles away by Tuesday, June 20 but the travellers left the site before being evicted. The school also had to serve an eviction notice after an "encampment" was set up on its field in August last year.

Last year the school said it had cost time and money to move the travellers on, but that it was committed to keeping the field open for the public to use.
