Children's Cancer Run opens entries for 2023 and organisers want your memories of charity fun run

The Children's Cancer Run is set to celebrate its 40th event in style next year - and organisers have announced they want to hear your memories from four decades of the lifesaving Tyneside-based fun run.

The team behind the event have confirmed next year's run will take place on Sunday May 14 2023 at Newcastle Racecourse. The event is the biggest single- charity fun run in the country and has raised more than £7.5m for children's cancer research over the decades.

Entries for the landmark regional event - which offers courses of one, three and five miles to suit age and ability - opened on December 5. Places cost £7 for adults and £14 for children, while for families who need it, a third child place is free.

The Children's Cancer Run was first held four decades ago when Chris Peacock, then a pupil at King's School, Tynemouth, was suffering from cancer. Fellow pupils wanted to organise an event to help fundraise in his honour.

Now chair of Children's Cancer North, Chris said: "From its humble beginnings at Kings School in Tynemouth four decades ago, the Children’s Cancer Run has grown to become one of our region’s most iconic events.

Chris Peacock, chairman of Children's Cancer North (Children's Cancer North)

"Because we’re marking a special anniversary in 2023, we’re inviting people to share their memories and experiences of the Children’s Cancer Run through the years. There may be people out there that ran the very first Children’s Cancer Run back in the early 1980s, or people that ran the event as a child and now run with their own children. We’d love to hear people’s stories and celebrate all the amazing individuals that make this event so special.

“As a survivor of childhood cancer, I know first hand what a difference Children’s Cancer North makes to the lives of people affected by this disease. That’s why the Children’s Cancer Run is such an important event, and why we’re celebrating its amazing legacy in 2023."

The Children's Cancer Run is organised by Children's Cancer North - a charity formed in 2021 following the merger of the North of England Children’s Cancer Research and Children’s Cancer Fund.

Anyone that would like to share their stories, memories, pictures or footage from the Children’s Cancer Run can email ccrun@childrenscancernorth.org.uk. To find out more and enter the run, visit childrenscancerrun.co.uk.
