Children 'dicing with death' at frozen Ayrshire river as police issue warning in wake of Solihull tragedy

Ayrshire police have today issued an urgent warning to members of the public not to tread on frozen rivers and lakes throughout the region.

The warning comes following reports this morning that young people were seen walking across frozen parts of the River Ayr, near the town’s University Avenue.

It has prompted police to issue a region-wide appeal, especially aimed at young people, given the tragic events that unfolded in Solihull, the West Midlands, a few days ago.

Four children died there after falling into an icy lake while playing in a park.

The incident claimed the lives of Finlay Butler, eight, his brother Sam Butler, six, their cousin Thomas Stewart, 11, and ten-year-old Jack Johnson - who also fell into the lake at the beauty spot.

Police officers want to prevent a similar tragedy unfolding in Ayrshire.

A message on the South Ayrshire Police Twitter feed read: “We have received reports of young people going across the River Ayr, near University Avenue, Ayr.

“We are urging the public not to try to walk on frozen parts of the river. Stay safe, do not venture onto frozen water.”

And a spokesperson for the Royal Lifesaving Society UK had this to say: “In winter, children and pets are particularly at risk when tempted to play on the ice formed on open water, and adults can find themselves at risk in attempting to save them.

“Taking a nice walk in cold weather with your family, friends or dogs in tow can be really refreshing, just make sure you know some simple tips on how to stay safe in winter.

“Areas with frozen lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs can be beautiful places to visit during the winter months but all too often many people risk their lives by venturing onto frozen water.”
