A woman has been accused of attempted murder after a child suffered serious knife injuries.

Police were called to Launceston General Hospital in Tasmania after the 33-year-old and the child, who is known to her, arrived at the facility on Monday night.

The woman, who has non-life-threatening injuries, was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday and will face a hospital bedside court sitting.

The child has been flown to Melbourne for medical treatment and is in a serious condition.

Tasmania Police said investigations were ongoing and there was no risk to the public. They have asked anyone with information to come forward.
