A young child has been flown to Adelaide for treatment after being assaulted in the town of Tennant Creek, south of Darwin, on Sunday.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with a single count of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering serious harm over the incident.

Police allege the man was intoxicated and assaulted the child with a blunt weapon.

NT Police Assistant Commissioner Michael White said the Royal Flying Doctor Service was called in to medevac the child to receive care in Adelaide.

"That young child has sadly been conveyed to the Women's and Children's Hospital due to the serious injuries they have received," he said.

Assistant Commissioner White would not comment on the weapon nor the age of the child, except to say they were below three years of age.

The 26-year-old man faced Alice Springs Local Court today and will appear again in July.

In a statement on Tuesday, NT Police said the child was in a stable condition and was receiving ongoing medical treatment.
