The conversations surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs’ plans without Tyreek Hill have been frequent this offseason. Fourth-year Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman appears to believe that he can fill the void left by his former teammate.
Hardman turned heads last week during his appearance on ESPN’s “First Take” with a show of confidence, believing that he can play a more significant role in the offense without Hill. The outspoken Hardman showed his willingness to be a leader and prominent part of the receivers group at the end of last season.
During Monday’s training camp press conference, Hardman spoke about the improvements he’s made this offseason ahead of what he believes will be a breakout season for him.
“I mean, I think it’s all general improvement honestly,” said Hardman. “Just talking routes, catching better. Recognizing defenses better, watching a little bit more film. So I think all that goes into account of trying to become an overall better player in general.”
Hardman’s 59 receptions for 693 yards and two touchdowns last season showed signs of promise that he could continue to grow into a reliable target for Patrick Mahomes. He credits learning from veterans before him, which has helped his transition to becoming a better professional.
“I think I’m ready,” said Hardman. “You know, learning from the guys that have been in front of me, the veterans that have been in front of me and also having Trav (Travis Kelce) still here. I think just developing, you know what I’m saying, like you said tracking the ball, looking up instead of looking back, knowing what’s around me, knowing my surroundings. So, all that taking it (into) account and just trying to be better year after year, so definitely poised for that for this year and definitely have gotten better every year.”
The evolution of Hardman over the years is a welcome sight for Chiefs fans. He’s been loaded with potential since being drafted, and the belief is that he’s primed and ready for a breakout season.
