Chiefs to sign former Bears WR Dazz Newsome to practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding to their collection of practice squad receivers.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are set to sign former Chicago Bears WR Dazz Newsome to the practice squad. This comes after WR Chris Conley was poached by the Tennessee Titans and WR Daurice Fountain requested his release. Fountain actually ended up signing to the Bears practice squad, so this is a bit of a swap of sorts.

A former sixth-round draft pick by Chicago out of North Carolina in 2021, Newsome missed a chunk of the offseason with a fractured collarbone. He spent the entire 2021 NFL season on the Bears’ practice squad. He appeared in three games total with the Bears recording two receptions for 23 yards and six punt returns for 75 yards.

Newsome didn’t make 53-man roster cuts this past season, despite Chicago being starved for receiver help. He’s since had workouts with a few NFL teams, but this will be his first shot since leaving Chicago.

In his final two seasons at UNC, Newsome recorded over 1,600 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. The 5-10 and 184-pound receiver was also a punt returner for the Tar Heels with 48 career punt returns for 535 yards and a touchdown.

Newsome will become the fourth receiver on the practice squad joining Marcus Kemp, Cornell Powell and Ihmir Smith-Marsette. The team also has WR Jerrion Ealy currently on the reserve/suspended list. The Chiefs will still have one free spot on the practice squad after signing Newsome.
