The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a player who spent some time on their practice squad during the 2021 NFL season.
According to the league’s personnel notice for Wednesday, the Chiefs signed LB/DE Shilique Calhoun to a reserve/future contract. Calhoun was a former third-round draft pick by the Las Vegas Raiders out of Michigan State in 2018. The 6-4 and 260-pound defender has bounced around the league, spending time with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.
Calhoun signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad back in early November after trying out with the team. He actually had two tackles against Kansas City during the preseason this year when he was with the 49ers, but didn’t see any action during the regular season with the Chiefs. He was a practice squad protection ahead of Week 15 as the team had some injury and COVID issues they were dealing with. A few weeks later ahead of the divisional round of the playoffs, Calhoun was among four players released from the practice squad by Kansas City.
As we predicted back then, it wasn’t the end for some of those players. Both Calhoun and Nakia Griffin-Stewart are now back with the team. When the new league year begins in March, they’ll officially become part of the 90-man offseason roster.
Bringing in competitive depth is important for the Chiefs as they turn the page to 2022. Adding players like Calhoun and Griffin-Stewart, who already know the system, will only increase competition heading into the offseason.
