The Kansas City Chiefs may have lost their first preseason matchup on Sunday, but there were plenty of bright spots in the game that were overshadowed by the final score.
Promising prospect Justyn Ross caught his first touchdown off the arm of Shane Buechele in the second half, which was a positive sign for the second-year receiver’s development after his strong training camp showing. Buechele commented on the play during Kansas City’s post-game press conference and described the emotions he felt after connecting with Ross for the highlight score.
“That was awesome,” Buechele said of Ross’ touchdown grab. “Seeing the smile on his face after he caught that ball was the best part. He did a great job of running the route and just executing the play. I was happy for him. It was awesome.
“He did a great job of executing and both of us being on the same page. After that, we were all excited about seeing the smile on his face, seeing all of the hard work that he’s put in from all of his injuries. [It] was tough times for him, so for him to be out on the field, trusting his ability and executing was awesome. It was good to see.”
The connection that Ross had built with his quarterbacks in St. Joseph was evident in every clip that the Chiefs showed of his work at training camp, and the fact that he was able to come down with such an impressive catch in his first NFL action was proof that the hype around him is warranted.
Watch for Buechele to look for Ross in the coming weeks as both players try to make their case for a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster next season.
