The popularity of the Kansas City Chiefs over the past few seasons has sparked many players to be featured in commercials, shows, and many different campaigns over the years. The constant attention can influence players to pursue more outside of the sport, distracting the franchise.
The increased attention over the years surrounding Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce would be a lot for most players, but the multiple-time All-Pro continues to move unfazed. Whether it’s his many commercial spots, podcasts, dating life, or hosting Saturday Night Live, he remains focused on football. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes took time during his Wednesday press conference to praise Kelce’s ability to balance and stay down to earth.
“Travis has always been Travis,” Mahomes told reporters. “It’s been cool to watch for me because he has all that attention, but he’s just been himself the whole time. He’s still Travis Kelce, He will still walk through the stadium and treat every single person like they’re his best friend. And he’s going to be like that in the locker room every single day. It hasn’t been any different.”
Kelce finished only 16 yards shy of another 1,000-yard season after missing two games, displaying the dedication to winning and production regardless of outside interests. Mahomes would highlight Kelce’s recent appearances on SNL, including a hosting spot last year.
“It was really cool; It was a dream of his. He knows all the skits from guys that were on Saturday Night Live,” said Mahomes, “He was telling me the ones from before I was even born. I was like, ‘Trav, I’m not the same age as you, I don’t even know who that is.'”
Kelce made it very clear that he’s not done playing football amid the rumors that he was considering retirement. His actions fit head coach Andy Reid’s philosophy, allowing players to express themselves well beyond the game.
