Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes keeps the hype train rolling for WR Justyn Ross

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is keeping the offseason hype train rolling for second-year wideout Justyn Ross.

Fans have seen a few different clips of Ross working with Mahomes down in Texas this offseason. The undrafted free agent out of Clemson spent the entire 2022 NFL season on injured reserve in Kansas City as the result of a foot injury, but it appears that he’s back healthy with a chance to contribute in 2023.

When Mahomes spoke to media members on Monday for the start of the team’s offseason workout program, he was asked about his latest impressions on Ross after throwing to him and working with him down in Texas. Mahomes said that he’s seen tangible improvements on top of Ross displaying his natural-born football talents.

“Yeah, I mean, the talent is through the roof,” Mahomes said of Ross. “I think anyone can see that. He’s getting better and better. Even though he wasn’t active all year he was in the building and he was able to see the guys and how we do things. Listening and being in the meetings and some of the stuff like that. I’m excited for him, man. To be able to get out there and get the reps in practice, get the little fine details that we like to do in this offense.”

As Ross has learned some of the minutiae of the Kansas City offense, he’s also working into a routine after not playing much football over the last year.  Mahomes explained that he’s had to get Ross to dial things back a bit in terms of how much he wants to do at this point in the offseason.

“Like I said, the talent is there,” Mahomes said. “He works his tail off. I’m like, ‘Man you’ve got to ease up a little bit.’ He wants to run like every route 100 times. You’d rather have to ease up on the guy or have him ease up on himself. You know he wants to work and be the best player that he can possibly be.”

It seems like they’ll have no problem with his work ethic once things are at full speed in Kansas City and St. Joe later this summer.
