The Kansas City Chiefs have named their quarterback coach for the 2023 NFL season.
With Matt Nagy getting the promotion to offensive coordinator, the team had a vacancy at quarterbacks coach and they also filled that with an internal candidate. Andy Reid announced at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday that the Chiefs have promoted David Girardi to quarterbacks coach.
Reid said the team also interviewed Boise State OC/QB coach Bush Hamdan for the vacancy, but they ultimately went with the internal hire of Girardi.
Girardi just completed his fifth season in Kansas City. In his first three seasons (2018-2020) with the team, Girardi was an offensive quality control coach. At the onset of 2021, Girardi was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach and passing game analyst. He’s served in that role for the past two seasons.
This is a pretty common pathway to the quarterbacks coach job under Andy Reid. Doug Pederson, Matt Nagy and Mike Kafka all worked their way up from offensive quality control coach to eventually becoming QB coach. All three of them have gone on to become offensive coordinators, with both Pederson and Nagy getting opportunities to be head coaches. That too could be the path for Girardi in the future.
Expect another internal promotion to fill Girardi’s vacated roles as well to be announced at a later date.
