Former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on Thursday had an opportunity to address former Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy’s viral comments.
Beiniemy, who left Kansas City last week to become the new Washington Commanders assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, elected to take the high road on Thursday in response to the following recent comments from McCoy.
“What’s his value? What makes him a good offensive coordinator?” McCoy asked earlier this week on Fox Sports’ Speak For Yourself show. “The problem is, a lot of these people that go on social media, ‘He should be the guy for the job,’ they haven’t played there. I’ve been in the rooms where he’s coaching and he has nothing to do with the pass game at all. When the plays are designed, that’s Andy Reid.”
McCoy continued: “When you talk about offensive coordinators, I can tell you what makes Brian Daboll with the Giants a very good coordinator. I can tell you about Andy Reid or Doug Pederson. But Eric Bieniemy, what makes him good? When we watch the film of practices and we correct the wide receivers, the running backs, the quarterbacks, he doesn’t talk in there. Andy Reid talks in there.”
In a video posted by ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III, Bieniemy told reporters in Washington on Thursday that McCoy “is entitled to his own opinion.”
Shortly after Bieniemy’s statement, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to Twitter to defend his former OC.
“There should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bienemy is,” Mahomes tweeted. “His leadership has a direct impact on the player/person I am today! 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time…and I cannot wait for him to continue to prove doubters wrong!”
Multiple former Chiefs players, including running back Jamaal Charles and safety Tyrann Mathieu, in the past week have used Twitter to support Bieniemy in the wake of McCoy’s comments.
Bieniemy joined Chiefs coach Reid’s staff in 2013 as the running backs coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 — the same season Mahomes became the Chiefs’ full-time starter.
Since 2019, the Chiefs went on to make three of the past four Super Bowls, winning two championships. Mahomes was named the NFL’s MVP in 2018 and 2022.
McCoy played for the Chiefs in 2019, totaling 465 yards rushing and four touchdowns in 13 regular-season games.
