The Kansas City Chiefs have been fortunate to have consistency at the placekicker position with Harrison Butker. The former Georgia Tech star has been with the team since 2017 and has achieved a field goal percentage rate that is the fourth-best in NFL history.
Butker addressed the media on Saturday for the first time since winning his second Super Bowl title with the Chiefs back in February. He shared promising news on his nagging ankle injury from last year, that no longer seems to be an issue for him entering the 2023 season.
“I think the way I’m kicking now more resembles how I was kicking after the injury,” Butker explained. “I thought I finished up the season well; I felt good, felt consistent. And that’s kind of how I’m kicking the ball now. I think I’m kicking better this training camp than I even did last training camp before the injury.
“I’m feeling really good within, the balls going through. And that’s the most important thing. I think I have probably changed some things in my technique, but I’m not trying to destroy the ball. I’m just trying to make sure it goes through the uprights, and I think sometimes, if you’re swinging too hard, it makes it hard to be consistent. So I feel like I’m in a good rhythm right now.”
Butker was clutch towards the end of Kansas City’s 2022 championship season while still recovering from an ankle injury sustained in Week 1. He famously connected on the go-ahead field goal to win Super Bowl LVII and will hope to be called upon for more high-stakes points in the coming season as the Chiefs attempt to defend their league title.
