In his opening statement at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid took some time to address what he described as a “fabricated” story about Eric Bieniemy.
The story, which has since been deleted by its author, alleged friction between Bieniemy, Reid and Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes. Reid put any notion of that to rest with his comments on Tuesday.
“This whole thing with Eric Bieniemy that has been written, it’s gotten kind of fabricated,” Reid said. “We were on vacation and over the two weeks I got back and all of the sudden it’s that I didn’t like Eric, and Eric didn’t like me and Patrick Mahomes and everybody else. That’s not the case. We all get along good and I’m glad he’s back with us and rolling. . . Anyways I just wanted to put that to rest. The rest of the time is yours.”
Reid like everyone in the Chiefs’ organization would have much rather seen Bieniemy get a head-coaching job than return to Kansas City. But that’s because he’s been deserving of the opportunity for a long, long time and certainly has nothing to do with any conflict within the organization.
“I thought he potentially would get a head-coaching job, which I would have been happy with too,” Reid continued. “But that’s not how it worked out.”
Bieniemy signed a one-year deal this offseason to return to the Chiefs as the team’s offensive coordinator with the hope that continued success will allow his resume to speak for itself. Perhaps he’ll finally have an opportunity to become a head coach next season.
