Chiefs HC Andy Reid comments on process for looming roster cuts

The end of the Kansas City Chiefs preseason is a relief for many veteran players with guaranteed spots on the team’s regular season roster. For those on the bubble, training camp and the exhibition games were their chance to prove that they belonged, and their torturous wait to see if they made the team ahead of the 2023 season starts on Sunday.

The decisions about who stays and who goes are made by many members of the front office staff and coaching staff led by head coach Andy Reid. Reid addressed the upcoming roster cut process during his post-game press conference after the Chiefs’ win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

“(General Manager) Brett (Veach) will get with his guys tomorrow (Sunday) morning, and then the coaches will grade the tape and get that in for their final, the coach’s final evaluation on the guys playing.” said Reid, “And then Brett will shake it all up and come out with the best group that we think can help us here and yeah, it’s always – this is the toughest day. When you have to make the cuts because these guys have busted their tails through all the OTAs and then through the training camp, so then you got – they all can’t be here, unfortunately.”

The Chiefs had several standouts on the bubble before Saturday’s victory over the Browns. Reid understands the depth chart assessments and the time it takes to construct the most effective roster.

“Yeah, I mean there’s – listen, there’s some tough spots of guys competing there at certain spots,” said Reid, “so we’ve got to make sure we make the right decision there.”
