The Kansas City Chiefs have a challenging task ahead of them on Thursday against the Detroit Lions, still riding high off last season’s hot streak. The defensive unit will look to slow down the many offensive weapons from Detroit and will do so without relying on a star player.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has continued to be creative with his packages and schemes since he’s been in the role. He has taken pride in working with missing players due to injury, suspensions, or other reasons. Spagnuolo spoke with reporters on Monday about his plan for the secondary on Thursday, offering different looks at Jared Goff and the Lions.

I believe in early in the year getting as many guys out there, but we did that. If you guys remember, we did a little bit with Darius Harris last year because Willie (Willie Gay Jr.) was with us early.
“Then. he had the games was down, but I think it’s important that because somewhere along the way here and during the season, we’re gonna get dinged guys are gonna get hurt. It’d be nice to know that guys that are going in and have a little bit of solid background of playing some snaps.”
The Chiefs used multiple players in place of Willie Gay Jr. while he was dealing with a suspension. Spagnuolo’s mindset of having players get as much experience as possible was helpful last postseason with rookies playing clutch minutes.
