The Washington Commanders agreed to terms with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as the team’s new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Friday.
On Saturday, the two sides made it official as Bieniemy signed his contract.
Now that he’s officially left Kansas City and joined Washington, the Chiefs honored Bieniemy for 10 years of service with the franchise, including the past five as offensive coordinator. During Bieniemy’s five seasons as offensive coordinator, the Chiefs went to three Super Bowls and won two.

Bieniemy initially joined the Chiefs as running backs coach in 2013. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 when Matt Nagy was named head coach of the Chicago Bears. Bieniemy experienced more success than the coordinators before him [Doug Pederson and Nagy] but was continually passed over for head-coaching opportunities.
One of the knocks against Bieniemy in Kansas City was he didn’t call plays. While head coach Andy Reid was the primary play-caller, Bieniemy did call some plays. Also, Pederson nor Nagy called plays for the Chiefs.
In his new position with the Commanders, Bieniemy will design the entire offense, call plays and is under a multi-year contract. Bieniemy will meet with the media on Thursday in his introductory press conference.
