While mainstays like Joe Burrow and Trey Hendrickson made the headlines during a 27-12 Cincinnati Bengals win over the New York Jets, it was cornerback Chidobe Awuzie making splash plays that went overlooked.
Not everywhere, though.
Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, for example, named the No. 1 cornerback one of the week’s secret superstars for a showing that included just three catches on nine targets for 36 yards:
“And like Ogbah, Awuzie had several near-misses in his own way. All three of his breakups were impressive athletic plays showing off his top-tier technique, and it would have not been out of the question for him to walk out of MetLife Stadium with three interceptions.”
Awuzie’s big day included at least one prevented touchdown, too.
For Bengals fans, Awuzie looking like a star isn’t much of a shocker after the superb year he put in last year after being tossed into the No. 1 role with Trae Waynes out.
The Bengals will need another showing like this on Thursday night when Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins offense visit town.
