Chicken costing as much as beef for the first time since the 1950s may come to symbolise the cost of living crisis.
Though it was an expensive special treat in post-war Britain, many now depend on chicken as an affordable source of protein, making its spiralling price disastrous.
No Government controls every price in our shops yet this one is justifiably accused of emptying family bank accounts.
It caps state pensions and benefits, including those paid to low-wage workers, way below inflation. At the same time, it refuses to ease rising fuel bills in any significant way.
Ministers eating into incomes with tax rises just as the cost of chicken and other essentials is going up shows how out of touch the Tories are. The British people deserve better.

Get rid of him
THE uncomfortable truth for Conservative MPs who claim to be sickened by sleazy behaviour is that politics can’t be cleaned up while Boris Johnson is in No10.
The lying lawbreaker, a charlatan without honour or integrity, is a significant part of the problem. He sets the tone and creates the culture. The party rots from the head down.
Johnson, a rogue who is a stranger to the truth and believes he can do anything he wants, is a stain on democracy.
Decent MPs, including some Conservatives, are right to express outrage at what has been uncovered and demand higher standards.
But they cannot credibly champion change and simultaneously defend a lawbreaking liar clinging to power.

Soap & glory
TV power couple Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue getting back together in Ramsay Street will be a fitting way for Neighbours to bring down its final curtain.
At 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes, the Australian soap opera has had a good long run.
We just hope bosses come good on their promise to give Scott and Charlene the fairytale ending fans would love to see.
