Chicago health officials suspended the license for the cafeteria and patient kitchen at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center after inspectors found more than 200 live cockroaches and a black slime substance dripping onto ice meant for consumption. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed the suspension took effect Oct. 16, Becker's Hospital Review reported. The teaching hospital is in the city's Lakeview neighborhood and is part of Charlotte, North Carolina-based Advocate Health.
Patients are still receiving meals. CDPH said patients are being served food prepackaged by an alternative supplier, an arrangement the department reviewed and approved, according to NBC Chicago. The department said it had received no reports of infectious disease clusters related to the kitchen.
