As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) commences in Chicago, several downtown businesses have taken precautionary measures by boarding up their storefronts amidst concerns of protests and potential unrest. Business owners cite past experiences of looting and vandalism, prompting them to proactively secure their properties.
The convention, scheduled from Monday through Thursday at the United Center and McCormick Place, is expected to draw around 50,000 attendees, including delegates, guests, and journalists. More than half a dozen protests are anticipated throughout the week, with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker confirming that approximately 150 National Guard members are on standby in case of escalating situations.
Chicago authorities have implemented security measures, including setting up fencing around the United Center and deploying a heavy police presence. Over 300 police officers from Illinois and Milwaukee have been deputized to assist with security, allowing the Chicago Police Department to focus on citywide patrols.
Despite the preparations, business owners are divided in their response to the situation. While some view boarding up as a preventive measure to safeguard their establishments, others remain unfazed. Vicki Fichter, owner of Chicago Board-Up Services, emphasized the cost-effectiveness of preemptive boarding compared to potential glass replacement post-incident.
City officials have sanctioned at least seven large demonstrations on various issues, with thousands of anti-Israel protesters expected to rally during the DNC. Mayor Brandon Johnson assured protesters of their First Amendment rights, while Police Superintendent Larry Snelling emphasized that authorities would intervene if protests escalate beyond control.
The convention will feature prominent speakers such as President Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton, all expected to endorse Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. As Chicago braces for a week of political activities, the city remains vigilant in ensuring the safety and security of its residents and businesses.
