Similar frustrations are being voiced in Chicago. The city spent a staggering $138 million in 2023 to care for migrants, leading to growing concerns among residents. This week, as a winter storm hit the city, hundreds of migrants were compelled to sleep inside warming buses without access to proper facilities such as showers and limited food options. This situation has further fueled public outrage.
The situation extends beyond Chicago and New York City. The state of Maine has allocated $3.5 million to provide rent-free shelter for 60 migrant families for two years in luxury apartments. While this measure may be seen as compassionate and supportive for migrants, it has also caused frustration among Maine residents who are already facing financial challenges due to the struggling economy.
Blame for the migrant crisis is being directed at different levels of government. Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has come under criticism for sending over 100,000 migrants to six designated sanctuary cities since April 2022, with New York City and Chicago receiving the highest numbers.
