Chiang Mai International Airport has recorded a new post-Covid high in passenger traffic, with daily numbers of more than 36,000, as airlines added 69 extra flights for Lunar New Year.
The airport's director said that from Feb 16–22 it added flights on several routes from China and Taiwan.
For the whole of February, the number of flights on these routes increased by 180, reflecting the strong return of Chinese visitors -- one of the key drivers of the northern region's tourism economy.
On Feb 12, the airport handled 36,554 passengers in a single day, the highest level since air travel recovery began after the pandemic.
Currently, the airport operates 33 routes -- 11 domestic and 22 international.
Airport officials have increased staffing and security measures.
Meanwhile, Lunar New Year celebrations in flood-hit Hat Yai district, Songkhla, are meeting expectations, with tourism reaching 30–40% of projected targets.
