Chhattisgarh polls see 10% of candidates with criminal backgrounds in the fray

RAIPUR: Despite the Supreme Court's directive to provide reasons for selecting candidates with criminal backgrounds, political parties in Chhattisgarh have allotted tickets to 10 percent of the 953 candidates with criminal backgrounds to contest the 2023 assembly elections, as per a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Chhattisgarh Election Watch.

The report reveals that 17-27 percent of candidates in the second phase of elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, with Congress featuring 13, BJP having 12, JCC (J) with four, and AAP with six contestants possessing criminal backgrounds.
