Just Like Jesse James singer Cher took to Instagram this weekend to reveal the launch of her own gelato brand, called Cherlato.
While the news may be a surprise to fans, Cher noted on social media that the plan had been five years in the works, adding that things were finally in motion, writing “Now It’s Finally HAPPENING [sic]”.
The Instagram post in which the launch was revealed depicts a brightly coloured gelato van, adorned with black and white photos of Cher eating ice cream as her hit single Believe plays in the background.
Fans of Cher were quick to jump on the flavour-guessing bandwagon, parodying lyrics and song titles including Ginseng, Tramps, and Thieves, If I Could Turn Back Lime, Dark Chocolate Lady and Do You Believe In Lime After Love.
No official date was given for the launch — and there’s no word on whether we’ll see it here in the UK — but it looks like the van has been quietly rolling out across the pond in LA. “Yesterday, I sampled a chocolate scoop in a ‘gold’ covered cone from the truck parked off Sunset Boulevard,” one fan wrote. “It was a decadent delight! Tickled to be amongst the first to try the treat. Wishing you and @giapokitchen a smashing success.”
The post indicates that Giapo Kitchen, a New Zealand based ice cream and gelato supplier, are providing the actual gelato element of Cherlato.
Cher shot to fame as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher with an incredibly successful solo career alongside, and is believed to have sold more than 100 million records.
Whilst she continues to make music — as recently as last week she was promoting her Paradise is Here sunrise mix — this latest announcement of a new gelato brand comes as something of a departure for the 77 year-old, but one very on trend: celebrity-endorsed foodstuffs appear to be a winning formula at present. Previous successes include Cara Delevigne’s prosecco brand Della Vite and the Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Neat Burger.
