Chennai: Rs 93 crore allotted for work on flood mitigation

CHENNAI: The state highways department has sanctioned 93.70 crore towards flood mitigation work in Chennai metropolitan area.

After last year's monsoon, the state government in October 2021 constituted an advisory committee on mitigation and management of flood risk in Chennai under the chairmanship of retired IAS officer V Thiruppugazh.

This committee recommended a slew of measures to avoid inundation in flood-prone areas and provide connectivity to the missing links in the storm water drainage system maintained by the highways department.

This included construction of drains at Valasaravakkam-Ramapuram Road, Inner Ring Road and Grand Western Trunk Road, precast culvert boxes at vulnerable locations, and high-level bridge at Medavakkam-Kudimiyandthoppu (ELCOT) and Semmancheri-DLF Road.

The committee estimated that it required 93.7 crore to take up these works.
