CHENNAI: The state highways department has ruled out the possibility of allowing two-way traffic on the Pallavaram flyover.
Following repeated requests from commuters, highways and police department studied the possibilities of introducing a two-way traffic system along the flyover on GST Road.
Since the authorities did not find the two-way traffic system feasible, the highways department has now decided to acquire additional land to expand the portion of GST Road, said G Jainthy, divisional engineer (highways), while replying to a petition under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
“For traffic towards Tambaram, it was proposed to allow traffic at grade level with three lane width, for which land acquisition is in progress," the engineer said.
Dissatisfied with this, V Santhanam, a resident-activist from Chromepet, said that the government has spent more than 8 crore on this project, but has failed to reduce traffic congestion. During the evening peak hours, thousands of vehicles leave the city. But they are forced to use the narrow road below the flyover, and this has indeed worsened the traffic congestion, he said.
