CHENNAI: Police on Friday arrested a man for cheating a youngster of ₹2.25 lakh by promising him admission in a deemed university in Maraimalai Nagar. The arrested man was remanded in jail.
Police said Mohammad Ali Ansar, 33, who finished his MBA at the same university in 2010, told Athi Kesavan, 20, that he would help him get admission to the institution. Ansar took ₹2.25 lakh from Athi and gave him a fake receipt along with the college logo violating trademark licences.
Athi realised the receipt was fake only after he visited the college and made inquiries about his admission. The college authorities were surprised to know that Ansar has cheated the youngster. Following this, the college authorities lodged a formal complaint at the Maraimalai Nagar police station.
Police apprehended Ansar from his house in Thiruvithancode, Kanyakumari. Inquiries revealed that after Ansar completed his course, went to his native place and worked as a consultant for businessmen.
The victim who knew Ansar through a common friend approached him and inquired about career guidance.
Ansar convinced him that he knew many senior people at the college. He also collected cash as commission to get the admission.
Police are checking if Ansar had committed such an offence earlier. They seized seals and documents from him. He was remanded in prison after being produced before a magistrate in the city.
