Chennai: Man ends life after losing money in online rummy

CHENNAI: A 39-year-old man who incurred a loss of more than ₹15 lakh playing online rummy games hanged himself at his Porur home on Friday.

Police said the deceased, P Prabhu of Vigneshwara Nagar, was frustrated and decided to end his life. He lived with his wife Janani, 36, and their child. His wife had gone out on Friday morning to meet a relative and returned at night to find the door locked from inside. When there was no response to her knocks, she peeped in through the window only to find her husband hanging from the ceiling.

On information, a team of personnel from the SRMC Porur police station broke open the door and recovered Prabhu’s body. It was sent to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital for an autopsy.

Inquiries revealed that Prabhu had lost his job a year ago due to the pandemic after which he became addicted to liquor and online gambling. While he lost about ₹20 lakh given by his father in online gambling, he later started using credit cards to play game and lost another ₹15 lakh. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
