Chelsea Women clean up at London Football Awards as Leah Williamson claims major prize

Chelsea Women cleaned up at last night's London Football Awards following another stellar year in the WSL.

The awards celebrate the best the sport has to offer in the capital, with the latest recipients announced in a ceremony at the Roundhouse in Camden on Monday. Chelsea's Lauren James, who has established herself as one of the most exciting young talents in world football this term, won the Women’s Young Player of the Year award.

Meanwhile, teammate Sam Kerr bagged the FA Women’s Super League Player of the Year award for the second year running after helping the Blues to their third consecutive title in 2021/22.

Reacting to her award win, the Australian said: "Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, everyone. Everyone in this room knows you don’t win an award without a million people helping you.”

Arsenal’s Leah Williamson and Beth Mead were also in attendance at the ceremony and collected the Power of Football Award on behalf of the Lionesses. The honour was introduced this year to mark outstanding work within the game and was awarded to Sarina Wiegman's squad for their heroics at last summer's EUROs.

Looking ahead to the Women's World Cup in New Zealand later this year, Williamson said “We’ll continue to do what we’re doing and maybe add another one in the summer!”

Emma Hayes, who picked up the Outstanding Contribution to London Football prize in 2022, was nominated for Manager of the Year this time around, though she was beaten to the prize by Arsenal men's boss Mikel Arteta.

All income raised from last night's ceremony will go to charity Willow, which helps provide special days for seriously ill adults aged 16 to 40.
