Early goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola sent Paris Saint-Germain on their way to an easy Champions League win over Chelsea as the holders booked their place in the quarter-finals.
The hosts came into the game hoping for a remarkable comeback but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pounced on a mistake from Mamadou Sarr to poke in within six minutes, effectively ending the tie as a contest as he made it 6-2 on aggregate.
And the Blues found themselves two down less than 10 minutes later, Bradley Barcola firing in a superb second to wrap up the win as Stamford Bridge began to show its discontent.
The hosts showed some fight as the game went on but a third PSG goal – courtesy of Senny Mayulu – confirmed the club’s joint-heaviest aggregate defeat in the Champions League, leaving the Chelsea hierarchy with plenty of questions as they’re left to battle for a potentially vital top-five finish as the seasons nears its end.

Liam Rosenior is under pressure already after Chelsea thrashed by PSG in Champions League
23:21 , Chris WilsonThe players emerged to packed stands on every side of Stamford Bridge. The Champions League music tingled. Flamethrowers lit up the sky. The night bristled with possibility for approximately five minutes.
That was how long it took for PSG to breach Chelsea’s defence. Mamadou Sarr blinked at a high ball like the dying sun before miscontrolling into the path of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who whipped a first-time finish beyond Robert Sanchez. The energy drained out of the stadium. There would be groans, ironic cheers, boos and expletives hurled into the night sky before the end of this damning 3-0 defeat.

Joe Cole questions ‘strategy and direction’ at Chelsea after humbling 8-2 defeat to PSG
23:40 , Chris WilsonFormer Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has questioned the direction of the club and the strategy of the current ownership after the Blues crashed out of the Champions League with an embarrassing 8-2 defeat at the hands of PSG.
Liam Rosenior’s side had high hopes for a comeback after last week’s 5-2 loss in Paris but they found themselves behind after less than six minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pounced on a mistake from Mamadou Sarr to poke past Rob Sanchez.
And while the tie was already effectively over, Bradley Barcola added a second around 15 minutes in before a Senny Mayulu goal in the second half was the final blow in a 3-0 loss on a chastening night for the hosts.

Hargreaves: 'They’ll do well to finish in the top five'
23:10 , Chris WilsonA final word from Owen Hargreaves on TNT:
“If they can win the FA Cup and finish in the top five, they’ve had a good season.
“But if you look at those fixtures, City, Man Utd, Liverpool away. They’re really difficult, they’ll do well to finish in the top five.
“They need to turn it around. This is not on Liam [Rosenior], they’ve got a very young team but they need to do it.
“You see all those fixtures, if they can find a way to win the FA Cup and finish in the top five that would salvage the season”.
Enrique: 'We are improving our level'
22:58 , Chris WilsonLuis Enrique was last to speak to TNT Sports after the final whistle:
“It has been a tough season, a lot of players injured, a lot of matches, it’s always difficult to win every single match but that’s our condition, everyone wants us to win every single match and that’s impossible in football.
“But we are happy, we’re in the last part of the season, the most crucial time, and I think we are recovering players, we are keeping our level and improving our level, and that’s positive.
On the options available to him, he added: “The problem is for them, not for me! I’m happy to have these types of players, every time I choose different players they perform. That’s the mentality of the team.”

Hargreaves: 'You need experienced players'
22:48 , Chris WilsonHere’s some reaction from Owen Hargeeaves on TNT Sports:
“The club should want to win the biggest trophies, the Premier League, and the Champions League. Right now they're miles off it.
“They signed some brillliant yoiung players, but they’ve got too many young players. All these great Chelsea teams, they’ve had world class experienced players, John Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Makelele, Essien.
“It’s great to have these kids, but you need experienced players. The guys who own this football club and buying the players, they have to understand that.
“You can’t be having three academy kids starting in the back four against the European champions. It’s impossible.
“8-2 over two legs, it’s too much,” he added.

Kvaratskhelia: 'It was an important win for us tonight'
22:38 , Chris Wilson“It’s important when you come to this kind of stadium, you need an atmosphere to win the game. It’s very important for us and we just have to gain our confidence back,” says Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on TNT.
“It was an important win for us tonight and we are really happy about that, but we have to continue. We have to be focused for our next games.
“We know that we are capable of anything, but it’s difficult. We have many games ahead, we just have to play our games and be focused, We have to work hard and continue like this.,” he added.

More from Cole
22:32 , Chris WilsonHere’s more from former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole:
“There’s a lot of money being spent and we need to really think of what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. That’s simply not good enough.
“There’s 20-year-olds and 19-year-olds on the pitch today. There’s time to grow, improve and get better.
“They’ll have better nights in their career. But as a football club, you’ve got to go football club first, not business first. Simple as that, or else you’ll get performances like that.”
Cole: Chelsea 'a million miles away'
22:27 , Chris Wilson“That is a real leveller of where this club is compared to Paris,” says Joe Cole on TNT Sports.
“PSG are the gold standard, they are the champions of Europe, but it showed that Chelsea are a million miles away over the course of two legs.
“This isn’t a Liam Rosenior problem. Liam’s doing what he’s doing, he’s just come through the door.
“This is a problem with strategy and the direction of where the club are going. This is a real eye-opener to where we are as a club at the moment.”

Rosenior: 'You have to trust them'
22:14 , Chris WilsonHere’s more from Rosenior on TNT:
On Mamadou Sarr: "Mamadou, he's a very good player, but we missed our two starting right-backs. There are times when you have to put players in and you have to trust them. It took the wind out of our sails.
On Trevoh Chalobah injury: "Trevoh, I just asked the medical team. He's got a high ankle sprain, so I'm praying it's nothing too serious because we can't lose another defender.
"When you go through a difficult run, you have to make sure your habits are right. We have a really difficult game at Everton and we have to be at our best to get a result there,” he added.
FULL-TIME! Chelsea 0-3 PSG
22:10 , Chris WilsonHere’s what Liam Rosenior has to say after that result:
"A tough night. We knew it was a tough ask and to start the game in the manner that we did. We had the ball in the final third. you cna't make mistakes at this level. We had the ball in their box and Barcola hit one from 25 yards into the top corner. Their belief grows.
“They were clinical. The third goal, ball breaks and he hits in the top corner. I haven't looked at the stats yet, but we had a lot of shots. They didn't make mistakes. I want to thank the fans because they saw how hard the lads worked,” he added.

No replays of the injury to Chalobah, due to it apparently looking very nasty. The defender needs a stretcher as he comes off, and as the Blues have used all of their subs, nobody comes on to replace him.

A break in play here as Chalobah is down and needs treatment. Hakimi is waving the medical team to come over, and it doesn’t look great at the moment.

It certainly has the feeling of a friendly now, though Chelsea have had all the chances in the last 10 minutes or so.
Nothing to really test Safonov though.

It’s another great goal too. Vitinha plays a through ball to Kvaratskhelia on the left, and he cuts in before laying it back to Hakimi.

HALF-TIME! Chelsea 0-2 PSG
20:58 , Chris WilsonPSG were coasting for the majority of that first half and unsurprisingly it already feels like this match - and by extension the tie – is over.
PSG haven’t even played especially well, and while Chelsea haven’t played badly either, they’ve just allowed the French side to coast to a 2-0 lead.
Some of the football from the visiting side has been superb, but Chelsea have allowed them to get to this point!
It could be a procession in this second half.

A rare foray forward for the Blues as Pedro leads a counter, wrestling past Pacho before firing an effort that Safonov is equal to. The ‘keeper is then fouled on the corner.

Chelsea are not in this at all at the moment. They can barely keep the ball when they get it and they’re finding it difficult to take it off the PSG players.

It might sound strange but Chelsea haven’t even played that badly, but they’re two goals down.
The first was a mistake from Sarr and the second really is a brilliant finish, though they should have closed Barcola down long before he got the shot away.
'What a finish'
20:18 , Lawrence OstlereReaction from Lawrence Ostlere, who’s in place at Stamford Bridge:
“What a finish, to the goal and surely to this tie, too. Caicedo got himself in a right mess and PSG broke quickly. Hakimi caused problems down the right at the end of the first leg, and he does so again here. Then it was over to Bradley Barcola: one touch and bang. Au revoir.”

A frantic start at the Bridge, though Chelsea are in real trouble now. PSG have already threatened again since the goal too.
'Poor defending by Sarr'
20:10 , Chris WilsonReaction from Lawrence Ostlere, who’s in place at Stamford Bridge:
“That was really poor defending by Sarr. He kept looking at Kvaratskhelia while the ball was in the air, rather than concentrating on the ball itself, and never looked comfortable under it. Rosenior talked before the game about the importance of cutting out individual mistakes...”
GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 PSG
20:10 , Chris Wilson6 mins
GOAL! Just the start PSG wanted!
They have the early goal and that could well be the tie wrapped up.
Sarr fails to clear a long goal kick and his touch ricochets into the path of Kvaratskhelia, who wrestles him off the ball before sliding a cool finish past Sanchez.

The Chelsea case proves that cheats prosper and exposes the Premier League’s biggest problem
19:45 , Chris WilsonWhen you stand back, the scale of the Chelsea case is actually staggering. Over a minimum of seven years, there were at least 36 undisclosed payments, forming part of seven known major transfer deals. Such evidence - and it is only what is known - illustrates a pattern of behaviour that amounts to industrialised cheating.
Out of that, Chelsea won two Premier League titles and a Champions League, tangibly changing the historical record of English and European football.
And the consequences for that?

How the Chelsea case proves that cheats can prosper in the Premier League
Rosenior: 'We have to go with real energy and no fear'
19:40 , Chris WilsonHere’s what Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has to say ahead of kick-off:
“It needs to be near perfect, but we’re capable. The disappointing thing about the scoreline at the moment is that for 75 minutes, we put in a very giod performance.
“We were more than even, so we know we’re capable. I’ve seen the lads do it in the summer, score three goals against this team, and we’re going to have to do it this evening.
On his changes, he explained: “Malo [Gusto] & Benoit [Badiashile] both pulled out very late with illness. Sometimes football throws these things up and you have to adapt.”
“We have to go with real energy and no fear,” he added.
Chelsea punishment ‘the deal of the decade’, claims sports law expert
19:35 , Chris WilsonA sports law expert says it is “difficult to dispute” that Chelsea gained a sporting advantage from a series of undisclosed transfer payments under former owner Roman Abramovich – and believes Manchester City will be “heartened” by the outcome.
Chelsea avoided a points deduction after their new owners self-reported the payments to the Premier League and other authorities during their 2022 takeover of the club.
The club have instead been fined £10.75million and given a one-year transfer ban, suspended for two years, as part of a sanction agreement with the Premier League in recognition of their “exceptional co-operation” with the league’s investigation.

Match stats
19:25 , Chris WilsonChelsea have lost their last three games in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and have never previously lost four in a row.
Paris SG have won 66.7 per cent of their Champions League knockout stage games under Luis Enrique (12/18). Of managers with 15+ KO stage matches with a team in the competition, this is the joint-highest win percentage by any team/coach duo, along with Barcelona under Luis Enrique (66.7 per cent - 10/15).
Chelsea vs PSG prediction
19:20 , Chris WilsonChelsea showed plenty of spirit and the ability to go toe-to-toe with the holders last time out, and without that dramatic collapse they could well have still been in this tie.
It might be too big a mountain to climb to make it to the next round, but we do think the Blues will show glimpses of promise and if the home crowd can get behind them then they’ll have enough for a narrow win.
Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 PSG
Why the Premier League’s case over Chelsea’s finances took so long – and the punishment is so light
19:15 , Chris WilsonOne of the reasons that Chelsea’s Premier League case took so long, and that the punishment has been so light, is because the club voluntarily gave “thousands upon thousands of documents” to the competition. That took a long time to go through, and ensured information came to light that officials would never have known about.
Hence Chelsea only receiving a suspended first-team transfer ban, a nine-month ban on academy signings and a £10.75m fine, for secret payments to players and unlicensed agents in transfers between 2011 and 2018.
The fine may be the largest the Premier League has ever given out, but it’s still essentially the sale of an academy player, a perception which fits with another, much more excoriating view of this judgment.

Chelsea hit with suspended transfer ban and £10m fine for breaching Premier League rules

Chelsea have been hit with a suspended transfer ban and a huge £10.75m fine after reaching a settlement over Premier League rules breaches.
The club has also been hit with an immediate nine-month academy transfer ban, with the one-year first-team ban suspended for two years.
The Blues voluntarily reported potential historical breaches of rules in 2022, and an independent commission has now concluded its findings.

19:05 , Lawrence OstlereReaction to the team news from Lawrence Ostlere, who’s in place at Stamford Bridge tonight:
“So the team leak today in French outlet Onze Mondial was correct.
“Fofana is on the bench after a scratchy couple of games, and Rosenior has gone with something of a makeshift back four of Chalobah-Sarr-Hato-Cucurella.
“Andrey Santos lines up in midfield alongside Caicedo, with Fernandez as the No 10, Pedro Neto on the left and Palmer off the right. Joao Pedro leads the line and Sanchez is back in goal after Jorgensen was preferred, regrettably, in Paris.”

Chelsea team news

Team news
18:40 , Chris WilsonThe line-ups will be released in the next five minutes, so here’s a reminder of the early team news...
Pedro Neto has been spared a one-match ban for shoving a PSG ball boy in last week’s leg, in a let-off from Uefa.
However, the Blues will be without Reece James for a number of weeks with a fresh hamstring problem.
Rosenior faces a dilemma in goal with Jorgensen a doubt with a groin issue, but his rival for the No 1 spot, Robert Sanchez, is similarly prone to errors.
PSG are without Fabian Ruiz with a knee injury and winger Quentin Ndjantou.
English clubs face a Champions League wipeout – but one thing can save them
18:30 , Chris WilsonThe Manchester City players have already taken in one message from Pep Guardiola, as they attempt what amounts to one of the greatest challenges in Champions League history. Bernardo Silva articulated some of it when he spoke on Monday before their last-16 second leg against Real Madrid.
“With one goal, the atmosphere of the ground will change,” said the Portuguese midfielder.
There is more to that comment than just an appeal to the crowd. The mythos of the Champions League remontada has now become so pronounced – to the point the Spanish name for grand comebacks has become commonplace – that there is a blueprint.

Chelsea hold a three-goal deficit in this tie. Only one team in Champions League history has gone on to eliminate the holders in the knockout stages after losing the first leg by as many as three goals: Deportivo de La Coruña versus Milan in the 2003/04 quarter-finals (lost 1-4 away, won 4-0 at home).

The Blues started the second half on top once more though, showing signs of what they can do when it all clicks as Pedro Neto cutback to Enzo Fernandez, who fired a superb finish in to level it once more.
However, that was the last of ‘good Chelsea’ on the night.
What followed was a dramatic collapse in the final 20 minutes of the first leg, with the Blues conceding three goals to leave themselves with a supremely difficult task this evening.
It all started with a mistake from Jorgensen, who fired a pass straight to a PSG player before Vitinha cushioned a lob over him for 3-2.
And Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came on to torment the Blues, scoring a magnificent fourth before bundling in a late goal to give Rosenior’s side a mountain to climb.

Story of the first leg: PSG 5-2 Chelsea
18:07 , Chris WilsonJust in case you need a reminder of what happened last week...
PSG started as you’d expect the holders to do at home, scoring early on as Bradley Barcola smashed a superb opener past Filip Jorgensen, but it was Chelsea in control after that, Liam Rosenior’s side putting together some lovely stuff before Malo Gusto fired them level.
The visitors failed to build on that leveller though, Ousmane Dembele scoring a second on the counter to leave the Blues trailing at half-time.

Match stats
18:00 , Chris WilsonChelsea are winless in their last five Champions League games against Paris SG (D2 L3); their joint-longest winless run against an opponent in the competition (also 5 v Bayern Munich – April 2005 to September 2025).
PSG are unbeaten in their last five games against English teams in the Champions League (W4 D1), and could go six in a row without defeat against them in the competition for the first time here.
Chelsea to make ‘decision’ on pre-match huddle after farcical referee debacle
17:50 , Chris WilsonChelsea manager Liam Rosenior has said that a decision is still pending regarding the team's pre-match huddle ahead of their crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Paris St Germain on Tuesday.
The ritual sparked farcical scenes ahead of Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle when referee Paul Tierney became inadvertently trapped within the circle of players.
Rosenior reiterated his stance that the huddle is not designed to intimidate or cause annoyance.
However, he declined to confirm whether the practice would be repeated as his side prepares to face PSG, needing to overcome a significant 5-2 deficit from the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea learn Pedro Neto verdict after pushing PSG ball boy
17:40 , Chris WilsonChelsea winger Pedro Neto has escaped a ban for pushing a ball boy in last week’s Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.
Neto pushed the ball boy off his chair in the closing stages of Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Parc des Princes, as he tried to retrieve the ball, sparking a melee between players from both sides.
The Portuguese apologised both on and off camera and gave the ball boy his shirt, and after an investigation by the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, Uefa has opted to only issue a warning to Neto for “unsporting conduct”.

The Liam Rosenior gamble that could haunt Chelsea after PSG lesson
17:30 , Miguel DelaneyThe report from a dramatic first leg in Paris...
A tie that had looked enthrallingly unpredictable, only for the first leg to be set by perhaps the most predictable development possible.
Liam Rosenior had replaced Robert Sanchez with Filip Jorgenson specifically for his footwork, and of course it was a bad goalkeeper pass that set up Vitinha for a decisive goal.
After that, Paris Saint-Germain took a step up – and then another two – and Chelsea didn’t go with them.

Rosenior faces a dilemma in goal with Jorgensen a doubt with a groin issue, but his rival for the No 1 spot, Robert Sanchez, is similarly prone to errors.
Chelsea vs PSG LIVE
17:02 , Chris WilsonChelsea face an uphill struggle in their fight to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, with a three-goal deficit to overcome to reigning champions PSG.
Liam Rosenior’s side acquitted themselves well for large periods of the first leg of their last-16 tie before a late collapse saw them ship three goals in 16 minutes at the Parc des Princes.
In a week in which goalkeeping howlers were in the spotlight Filip Jorgensen, drafted in for Robert Sanchez, made a major error for PSG’s third, with two more goals in quick succession leaving the Blues with a mountain to climb at Stamford Bridge.
Since last week’s first leg Chelsea lost 1-0 to Newcastle - their first defeat to the Magpies at home in 14 years - and were engulfed in a bizarre debate over pre-match huddles, while PSG are well rested after Sunday’s Ligue 1 match against Nantes was postponed.
