Chelsea missed the opportunity to move third in the Premier League as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle on Saturday. The Blues started the match on the front foot but were unable to impose themselves on Aaron Ramsdale’s goal, and the game plan fell apart as their high line was caught out.
One through ball was all it took to undo their defence as Joe Willock was sent racing forward with Anthony Gordon in tow. The ex-Arsenal man squared for his team-mate to tap home at the far post, and his goal proved decisive. Chelsea appeared tired and uninspired throughout the remainder of the tie. They created chances but were wasteful when they came, with Liam Delap squandering two on his own and Trevoh Chalobah heading wide in the second half. Joao Pedro added another lowlight as he headed onto the roof of the net late in injury time.
It seems their heads were still at the Parc des Princes, where they were trounced earlier by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first-leg earlier this week. This performance will not leave anyone in the Stamford Bridge stands confident for the reverse fixture on Tuesday. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle: Palmer problem persists but Sanchez solid
19:43 , Arthur FerridgeThis was a difficult evening for Chelsea.
Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau has had his say as to who impressed and who let the side down as Newcastle earned their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2012.

Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
19:30 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea's Champions League hopes have taken a massive hit after Newcastle secure a 1-0 win following Anthony Gordon's first-half goal. This was a chance to make a statement, but now the Blues will be watching on anxiously as United, Villa and Liverpool all play.
FULL-TIME: Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:28 , Arthur Ferridge90+8mins: A superb cross from Palmer meets the head of Joao Pedro... but his effort is onto the roof of the net.
And that does it at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:28 , Arthur Ferridge90+7mins: Just about time for one last Chelsea attack here...
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:27 , Arthur Ferridge90+6mins: The corner comes to nothing, but Chelsea are on the attack again.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:25 , Arthur Ferridge90+5mins: Home fans making their way to the exit now.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:24 , Arthur Ferridge90+4mins: Just about halfway through the period of added time now.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
19:23 , Arthur FerridgeSo close to an equaliser for James as his free-kick brushes the post. He has not been anywhere near his best, but the Chelsea captain so nearly made the difference there.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:22 , Arthur Ferridge90+2mins: Joelinton trips Palmer in the middle of the park and it will be a free-kick for Chelsea. Probably just outside of shooting range, this.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
19:22 , Arthur FerridgeEight minutes of added time, but we could be here another 80 and Chelsea would not look like scoring. It has been a really poor afternoon for the Blues and Newcastle look set to hold on for their first win at Stamford Bridge in 14 years.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:21 , Arthur Ferridge90mins: Eight minutes have been added on!
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:20 , Arthur Ferridge89mins: Lewis Hall is booked for time-wasting, now. Newcastle using every trick in the book to get this rare away win over the line.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:16 , Arthur Ferridge86mins: A great cross from Palmer goes begging as Delap fires wide. Again.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:15 , Arthur Ferridge84mins: Chelsea fans get something to celebrate as Aaron Ramsdale is booked for timewasting.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
19:13 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea look out of ideas and this game is slipping away from them. Newcastle have mot had to work particularly hard to keep Chelsea at bay, and the hosts' penalty pleas are becoming increasingly desperate.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:13 , Arthur Ferridge82mins: Fofana is replaced by Hato for Chelsea.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:12 , Arthur Ferridge82mins: Another long-range Gordon strike is parried by Sanchez.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:09 , Arthur Ferridge78mins: Another Chelsea penalty shout, this time it is Cucurella appealing full-throatedly for a handball, but Tierney says no. Corner ball.
The set-piece goes nowhere, but the follow-up cross is met by Chalobah, who heads agonisingly wide.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:08 , Arthur Ferridge77mins: More Newcastle changes as Hall, Murphy and Willock are replaced by Elanga, Burn and Trippier. In no particular order.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:06 , Arthur Ferridge75mins: A wonderful cross from James is batted down by Cucurella and sits up for Liam Delap at the edge of the six-yard box. It is a pristine scoring chance - as good as he’ll get this evening - but he launches it well over the bar and into the stands. Poor, to say the least.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:03 , Arthur Ferridge72mins: Willock has left the field of play and we will play on.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:01 , Arthur Ferridge71mins: Willock is down injured here and requires treatment.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
19:00 , Arthur Ferridge69mins: Sanchez is at full stretch to deny Gordon’s curler from 25 yards out.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:58 , Arthur Ferridge68mins: Joao Pedro shrugs off pressure from Joelinton and gets a shot away, but sees it blocked.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:57 , Arthur Ferridge67mins: No Chelsea player will be pleased to see Joelinton coming on in place of Woltemade.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:56 , Arthur Ferridge66mins: This must be overwhelmingly frustrating viewing for those of a Chelsea persuasion. They are laying siege to the Newcastle box and Palmer ever played Garnacho into it, but they can’t even get a shot off. Such a waste of a superb position.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:55 , Arthur Ferridge65mins: A wonderful ball forward from Hall has Woltemade in all kinds of space, but Cucurella ensures his cross does not reach its destination.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:54 , Arthur Ferridge63mins: Palmer is perplexed, but the on-pitch decision is ratified by VAR.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:54 , Arthur FerridgeA classic case of an attacker defending in his own box and Woltemade is lucky to get away with one there. It is clumsy, though in fairness probably not enough for a foul.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:53 , Arthur Ferridge62mins: PENALTY SHOUT! Palmer is tackled clumsily in the box by Woltemade, but Paul Tierney waves it away! Surely VAR will take a look...
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:52 , Arthur FerridgeRomeo Lavia is on. Chelsea need to get control of this game and Lavia is not a bad option to turn to in such a situation.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:51 , Arthur Ferridge61mins: Fofana tries another bicycle kick, this time attacking rather than defensive. He collides with Hall in the process and is penalised.
Lavia then replaces Caicedo. Not often you see him hooked.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:50 , Arthur Ferridge60mins: Not a bad move from Chelsea as Joao Pedro gets on Cucurella’s knock-down. His shot is deflected behind and the Blues have a corner.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:49 , Arthur Ferridge59mins: Seems Romeo Lavia will be the next Chelsea player brought off the bench.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:48 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea have not looked much better since the interval and this game is becoming stretched. A lot of tension inside Stamford Bridge, Newcastle have not won here since May 2012.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:48 , Arthur Ferridge57mins: Sanchez plays Fofana into trouble and he loses the ball in his own box, but appears to trip Gordon as he wins possession back. VAR checks and clears.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:47 , Arthur Ferridge56mins: Fofana misses a high ball, and opts to clear his lines with a bicycle kick. Unconventional, but got the job done.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:45 , Arthur Ferridge54mins: Garnacho cuts in off the left and gets a shot off, but the penalty area is crowded and there is a striped shirt in his way. The rebound falls to Cucurella, who trips over his own feet as he looks to control it.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:42 , Arthur Ferridge52mins: Rosenior must have given Chelsea a proper hairdryer treatment at half-time. They look a lot more lively so far in this half.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:41 , Arthur Ferridge51mins: Murphy wins a corner after his long-range strike is deflected behind and Sanchez can’t quite keep it in.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:41 , Arthur Ferridge50mins: Murphy and Gordon hare away on a pacey counter which has Chelsea scrambling, but the former’s through-ball is overhit and the attack falls to pieces. Let-off for the hosts.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:39 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: With that said, looks more like Pedro has dropped into the No10, but he is pushing high up the pitch when the Blues attack.
And the changes seem to be having an effect as Delap laces one towards Ramsdale and draws a save.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:37 , Arthur Ferridge46mins: Seems to be a twin striker setup for Chelsea now. Interesting move from Rosenior. Reece James has been moved to right-back, so let’s see if he can whip in some decent crosses.
2ND HALF: Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:35 , Arthur FerridgeAnd we are back underway.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:34 , Arthur FerridgeLiam Delap is coming on. A decisive move from Rosenior, who will not have been happy with what he saw from his team in the first-half.
Half-time changes
18:34 , Arthur FerridgeInterestingly, Liam Delap will replace Malo Gusto at half-time for Chelsea. Suggests a change of shape, unless the big target man is fancying a shift at right-back.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:20 , Arthur FerridgeBoos and cries of 'that is embarrassing' from the home support. They have not been pleased with what they have seen.
HALF TIME: Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:19 , Arthur FerridgeThe Blues are booed off at the break after a generally uninspiring first-half performance.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:19 , Arthur Ferridge45+3mins: Sanchez does very well to parry Ramsey’s deflected effort. Superb stuff from the Spaniard, who is rather auditioning to keep his No1 spot here.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:18 , Arthur FerridgeRosenior was very animated at the start of the game, ordering his players around and seemingly happy with how things were going. As we edge towards the break he is slumped in his seat. Chelsea have been really poor this half.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:16 , Arthur FerridgeThere will be four added minutes here.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:16 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: Ramsdale punches a Gusto cross clear of his lines, but Gordon does really well to track back and beat Reece James to the rebound.
Garnacho is effectively being double-marked by Livramento and Murphy. He’s been Chelsea’s biggest threat, which isn’t saying a huge amount, and he’s been locked down.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
18:13 , Arthur FerridgeWe have hardly seen any of Joao Pedro so far with Chelsea hesitant to get the ball into the area, then wasteful when they do choose to cross. The Brazilian has had 14 touches, the lowest of any Chelsea player.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:13 , Arthur Ferridge42mins: Another poor cross from Gusto floats into Ramsdale’s hands. Chelsea haven’t done anywhere near enough to test the keeper so far.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:11 , Arthur Ferridge40mins: James, for reasons best known to himself, looks to shoot. He was presumably looking to catch Ramsdale out, but the Newcastle keeper read his shot and shifted over. It misses wide, anyway. Wasteful from Chelsea.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:10 , Arthur Ferridge39mins: We resume with a Chelsea free-kick in the left channel, around 35 yards out.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:09 , Arthur Ferridge38mins: A brief break in play now so that Fofana and Thiaw, who are both observing Ramadan, can break their fast.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:08 , Arthur Ferridge37mins: Palmer picks up the ball in the D and gets a snap shot away, demanding a smart save from Ramsdale. Better from the Blues, there.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:06 , Arthur Ferridge36mins: Chelsea seem to have gotten away with one there, that was really clumsy from James. All eyes are on the Chelsea captain after he extended his contract this week, so far he is not doing much to celebrate that bumper deal.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:05 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: Check complete. No penalty.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:05 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: The corner comes to nought, but VAR are checking for a potential penalty after James seemed to drag Thiaw down off the ball.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:05 , Arthur Ferridge34mins: Ramsey splits Chelsea open with a very simple through ball, and Willock wins a corner from Sanchez with a tricky-to-deal-with cross.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:03 , Arthur Ferridge32mins: Another tentative, plodding spell of Chelsea attack ends with Gusto crossing tamely into Ramsdale’s hands. He throws the ball out to Harvey Barnes and in the blink of an eye the Magpies have Chelsea under the cosh.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
18:01 , Arthur Ferridge30mins: A lovely cross from Garnacho is left by Fernandez and Palmer neglects to hit it first time, instead giving the Magpies time to set themselves and block his tardy effort. Chelsea dictated the opening exchanges but have been so, so poor since Gordon’s goal.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
17:58 , Arthur Ferridge28mins: Just shy of half an hour played, and Gordon’s goal is the only shot of the day so far.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:56 , Arthur FerridgeAfter a promising start to the game Chelsea have become really erratic since Newcastle scored. Fofana has picked up a booking and forced Caicedo into a challenge that also saw him carded. Both situations came after poor touches from Fofana.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
17:56 , Arthur Ferridge25mins: Caicedo catches Woltemade late and goes into the book - his ninth yellow card of the season.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
17:54 , Arthur FerridgeFofana loses the ball to Gordon in the backfield and cynically trips him to cut out the attack. A silly mistake and he has been punished for it. This seems to be spiralling for Chelsea.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:52 , Arthur FerridgeThat opener came from absolutely nothing for Newcastle. Anthony Gordon with the simplest of finishes after Willock raced clear. Rosenior had moments earlier been telling Chelsea to push their defensive line up.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
17:51 , Arthur Ferridge20mins: The travelling Geordies are in full voice after that, and rightly so. It has been all Chelsea so far, save for those ten seconds or so. They need to crack on and find an equaliser sooner rather than later.
GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle | Gordon '18
17:49 , Arthur FerridgeNewcastle lead, and you have to say it is against the run of play. One through ball from deep sets Willock clean through on goal - he squares for Gordon to tap home. Where was the Chelsea defence?
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:47 , Arthur Ferridge16mins: Fernandez hits a piledriver from range and Palmer takes the full force of it in the face. He’s straight back to his feet - no damage done - but could that have been the opener?
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:45 , Arthur FerridgeThat should be Palmer's 10th league goal of the season. The ball was bouncing slightly and he slices his shot wide. Getting the best out of Palmer remains one of the big issues facing Rosenior.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:44 , Arthur Ferridge14mins: A lovely move from Chelsea, that. Gusto finds Palmer and the middle but his shot is shanked and flies wide. Chelsea really knocking on the door here.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:43 , Arthur Ferridge13mins: Garnacho picks Woltemade’s pocket and breaks goalwards, but his shot is poor and easily stopped by Ramsdale.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:42 , Arthur Ferridge12mins: The ball falls to James on the edge of the box and the crowd implores him to shoot. He takes a touch and lashes his effort into the second tier of the Matt Harding end.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:40 , Arthur FerridgeNearly the opener for Fofana and Chelsea. He gets up well but can't keep his header down. First real chance of the game. It has been an edgy opening nine minutes or so.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:40 , Arthur Ferridge9mins: Fofana gets his head to James’ corner but his effort is over the bar.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:39 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: Garnacho’s misplaced pass sets Livramaneto on the attack but Cucurella tracks back to dispossess him. The Blues counter and the ball is worked back to the Argentine, whose cross is just out of the reach of Joao Pedro. Corner for Chelsea.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:38 , Arthur Ferridge7mins: A pretty tame start from both sides, whose legs may still be feeling the weight of intense midweek European outings.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:36 , Arthur Ferridge6mins: Sanchez has just pumped it long just about every time he has touched the ball so far this afternoon.
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:36 , Arthur FerridgeRosenior applauds Sanchez's failed attempt to go long. Needs no reminding that Chelsea were stung when they tried to play out from the back against PSG in the week.
Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:34 , Arthur FerridgePaul Tierney found himself caught up in Chelsea’s huddle ahead of kick-off here. Not absolutely sure how that came to pass.

Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:33 , Arthur Ferridge2mins: Cucurella cuts out Newcastle’s first attack of the day, crafted by Tino Livramento’s through-ball to Murphy, who is wearing the captain’s armband for the visitors today.
KICK-OFF! Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
17:30 , Arthur FerridgeAnd we’re off!
Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
17:29 , Arthur FerridgeWith Chelsea the first of the Champions League chasing sides to play this weekend, tonight is a great opportunity for Liam Rosenior's men to lay down a marker. They could draw level on points with United and Villa with three points.
And Chelsea walk out in front of a crowdsurfer celebrating Reece James, one of our own, after he signed a new long-term contract yesterday.
So too did his sister, Lauren, talisman forward in the women’s side.
Nearly time to go
17:26 , Arthur FerridgeThe players are taking to the pitch. We’ll be underway very shortly!
Team news reminder
17:20 , Arthur FerridgeJust ten minutes to kick-off. Here’s how our two sides will be lining up today.
Chelsea XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, James; Palmer, Fernandez, Garnacho; Joao Pedro
Newcastle XI: Ramsdale; Hall, Thiaw, Botman, Livramento, Willock, Ramsey, Murphy, Gordon, Woltemade, Barnes
Newcastle changes
17:16 , Arthur FerridgeIt is in some ways a bizarre lineup from Eddie Howe today.
He makes six changes from this week’s draw with Barcelona, with none of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton or Sandro Tonali starting for the first time since Eddie Howe was appointed.
Anthony Gordon was ill midweek but returns here.
Liam Rosenior on Filip Jorgensen's absence
17:16 , Arthur Ferridge“I’ve got two very good goalkeepers. Obvously there has been a lot of talk, a lot of noise around them but they are both very good in their own right. Filip has a groin issue which unfortunately rules him out for today and I am delighted Rob is back in so he can show what a good goalkeeper he is.”
Joao Pedro
17:08 , Arthur FerridgeNewcastle attempted to buy Joao Pedro last summer before he decided to join Chelsea.
He already gave them reason to regret that failed transfer in the reverse of today’s fixture, scoring at St James Park back in December.
Can the Brazilian repeat the trick today?
Why isn't Filip Jorgensen in the Chelsea squad today?
17:00 , Arthur FerridgeFilip Jorgensen has been left out of Chelsea’s squad ahead of their game against Newcastle with a groin injury, reports Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau.
Liam Rosenior said in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Jorgensen had been struggling with a groin issue, and the Danish goalkeeper has failed to pass a late fitness test.
Jorgensen’s injury means Robert Sanchez starts in goal after being dropped to the bench for Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
It was Jorgensen’s mistake that allowed Paris Saint-Germain to take a 3-2 lead at the Parc des Princes, raising questions about whether he would start against Newcastle.

Newcastle XI
16:30 , Arthur FerridgeNo great shocks in that Newcastle team, though the absences of Lewis Miley and Bruno Guimaraes are conspicuous if not surprising.
The Magpies line up with two former Chelsea full-backs in Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.
The veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy, now 39, makes the bench.
Fan reaction: 'Best possible team'
16:27 , Arthur FerridgeWelcome back Robert Sanchez. Think this is our best available XI. No excuses lads, 3 points required! 💙 #KTBFFH #CHENEW #CFC https://t.co/bh1rVFHKii

Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge
16:20 , Arthur FerridgeAnother Chelsea game, another change in between the sticks. Robert Sanchez starts, while Filip Jorgensen is not even in the squad following his mistake against PSG. Just one other change as Garnacho replaces the suspended Neto.
