Chelsea vs Brighton LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and fan reaction

LIVE: Chelsea vs Brighton - (PA)

Chelsea vs Brighton LIVE

Chelsea finally recorded a win over bogey side Brighton in their first Premier League home game of the season. Xabi Alonso made an encouraging start to life as new Blues manager, overseeing wins over Fulham and Luton in hi opening two matches in charge, though a much sterner test was expected on Sunday afternoon as Brighton had won the last four meetings between the sides, including a league double last season.

With Emi Martinez making his debut just hours after his £7.5m transfer from Aston Villa was confirmed, Chelsea raced into a three-goal lead inside the opening 31 minutes with Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro all on target.

However, Malick Yalcouye and an own goal from Joao Pedro gave Brighton hope before Cole Palmer scored what proved to be the winner as Pascal Gross headed home a consolation in stoppage-time to complete the scoring in a seven-goal thriller in west London. Follow Chelsea vs Brighton back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea continue winning start

16:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea’s winning start to life under Xabi Alonso continued with a pulsating 4-3 win over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

It was another display of electrifying attacking football that should have had the game won inside half-an-hour, goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro putting the home side into a three-goal lead that was then almost dismantled by a brave Brighton fightback and their own clumsy defending.

Malick Yalcouye crashed in his first goal for the Seagulls, beating goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on his debut, then Joao Pedro’s own goal had Chelsea teetering on the edge of an embarrassing collapse on the hour.

As often before in such circumstances, they turned to Cole Palmer. He took matters into his own hands to take the game away from the visitors and send Alonso racing down the touchline in celebration, bulldozing through midfield to lash in his team’s fourth.

There we have it. A final suckerpunch, but too little, too late for it to really trouble the scorecards. Chelsea are victorious, but their defensive frailties remain...

He's back! The trademark celebration is out, and it's the Blues who are on song again. Cole Palmer picks the ball up, is afforded a yard of room - too much for a player of his quality - and he arrows it into the corner beyond the hapless Verbruggen.

GOAL! Chelsea 4-2 Brighton | Cole Palmer '74

That should do it, Cole Palmer is afforded far too much space to carry the ball and he finds the net with a fine finish.

The Malo Gusto in midfield experiment is over. The Frenchman, who has been relatively quiet in this game, has been shifted to right wing-back amid worries over Neto, while James is in the engine room now alongside Caicedo to shore things up and quieten what has turned into a tempestuous affair.

Colwill and Fofana have been sacrificed for Acheampong and Chavarria, with the latter shifting to left wing-back and Hato sliding into the back three to flank Lacroix.

That will put a blemish on Joao Pedro's otherwise sparkling afternoon. Chelsea undone by the short corner routine, as Gross' hopeful loft into the box deflects in off the Blues' No9.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-2 Brighton | Pascal Gross ‘63

63 min: GAME ON!

Chelsea caught cold from a short corner as Palmer doesn’t follow Gross’ run and his effort is deflected in off Joao Pedro.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

15:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

62 min: Martinez called into action to push Gomez’s effort behind for a corner. Routine save but the Chelsea fans enjoyed that.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

60 min: Wieffer twists and turns before shooting wide from inside the box. He was clipped by Rogers but the Brighton defender made first contact, so no penalty.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

15:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

That could have been Palmer's moment! He has been outshone by Joao Pedro and Rogers in this game so far, but the Chelsea No10 is sprawled on the turf, in disbelief that he hasn't scored from merely two yards out after great industry from Rogers to wrestle into the penalty area.

59 min: Concern for Chelsea as Pedro Neto needs treatment.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

15:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

58 min: Two chances for Chelsea to restore their three-goal lead. Neto skips past Kadioglu but can’t squeeze an effort in at the near post.

Rogers is quicker to the rebound and tees up Palmer who can’t keep his effort underneath the crossbar.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

15:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A bitty start to this second period, and a couple of jittery moments for the hosts. The free kick is met by Diego Gomez, one of the smallest players on the pitch, who rises highest and powers a header at goal, but it's narrowly wide of the target. Alarm bells for the Blues. They cannot take their foot off the accelerator...

54 min: Another half chance for Brighton falls to Gomez as he prods the ball wide. Difficult one for the winger as he had to improvise.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

15:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

49 min: Brighton dominating possession at the start of the second half, problem is they’re not threatening Chelsea until the ball is finally played forward and Fofana puts the ball out for a throw-in.

Martinez catches the ball, picks out Joao Pedro with a superb pass and the Brazilian jinks his way past a few challenges before seeing an effort blocked.

HALF-TIME

14:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A magnificent first period for the hosts. Every time they attack, they look as though they could score. They are looking a lot more solid in defence, too, but Xabi Alonso is prowling the touchline, hands behind his back, probably thinking that there is still more to come.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea need to make sure they're not over-confident moving towards the interval. Joao Pedro produces a lovely touch and dart towards the flank, but takes it a step too far with a wayward backheel that Kostoulas gobbles up, and Brighton are away.

He feeds Wieffer down the right, who crosses, and Gomez isn't far away with a header just over the top!

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

14:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+1 min: Into two minutes of stoppage time and it’s Brighton on the attack, good defending at the back post from Neto to keep out Kadioglu.

Then Vuskovic from 40 yards out shoots high and wide.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

14:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

44 min: Brighton chance, free header for Gomez but he puts it over the bar. Chelsea let off the hook there.

Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

14:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

41 min: Palmer’s cross is only cleared as far as Rogers and he swings his left boot at the ball but his shot curls away from the post.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

And there's the negative of having a natural winger at wing-back. Neto is the last line of defence, and he gets skinned down the Chelsea left as Kostoulas is sent through on goal by Yalcouye.

Martinez gets down to foil him, but the midfielder is alive to the rebound and volleys home to dash the debut clean sheet for the new Chelsea 'keeper.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-1 Brighton | Malick Yalcouye ‘35

14:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

35 min: WHAT A FINISH!

Malick Yalcouye has his first Premier League goal and it’s a beauty. Stunning volley after Martinez had made a good save from Kostoulas.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Back to front, in the blink of an eye. This has been a clinic from Chelsea, as Joao Pedro adds the third in a rampant display. He has been electric against his former employers, but that all stemmed from Rogers.

Calmness personified on the half-turn in his own half, playing a sumptuous reverse pass in behind for Hato to hare after down the left, and the wing-back has the awareness to pick out the No9, who finishes with aplomb, and he directs a fist pump at the bubbling travelling cohort, who had been taunting him following that earlier miss.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-0 Brighton | Joao Pedro ‘31

14:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: NO MISTAKE THIS TIME!

Joao Pedro missed a sitter a few minutes ago, but he finishes with aplomb after being picked out by Hato.

That feels like game over already.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton

14:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

29 min: Lovely cross to pick out Yalcouye in the box, the Brighton attacker was on the stretch and couldn’t get enough power on his shot to test Martinez.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

He is human! What a miss that is from Joao Pedro, who sits Vuskovic down before sidefooting wide! Alonso almost falls to his knees in disbelief in the technical area.

Superb persistence down the right from Neto to keep the ball alive, and some fluid patterns of play from the home side in the build-up as they created that chance. Alonso's men looking like a very well-oiled machine so far.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton

14:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

25 min: WHAT A MISS!

It should be 3-0 to Chelsea but Joao Pedro somehow rolls the ball wide from a few yards out. Great play from Neto to set up the chance.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton

14:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

21 min: Brighton corner. A goal here would make things interesting but Martinez eases the pressure with a confident claim.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Interesting that Alonso is more than happy - in fact, insisting - that Chelsea go long to Joao Pedro. He subtly waves Hato upfield and gestures for Martinez to hit the No9.

The plan almost works perfectly, as Joao Pedro wins the flick-on ahead of Dunk, and it almost runs for Hato spinning in behind, but Verbruggen sweeps up for the visitors.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton

14:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Brighton look like they are in but Fofana makes a timely interception to stop the ball making its way to Kostoulas.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Every time they stream forwards, they look dangerous, the home side. And this time is no different, it's a sweeping move, created by Rogers, who holds off his man to get to the left byline, and knock across the six-yard box for the simplest of finishes for Neto, ghosting in at the far post.

There's your positive for playing a natural winger at wing-back...

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Brighton | Pedro Neto ‘14

14:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: GOALLLLLLL

Chelsea double their lead as Pedro Neto pounces to get on the end of a Morgan Rogers cross.

Chelsea 1-0 Brighton

14:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: Joao Pedro is enjoying himself out there. A couple of delightful touches from the Chelsea striker in front of the watching Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A cheer from the home faithful as Martinez has his first involvement as a Chelsea player, punching the inswinging corner away authoritatively.

Austin MacPhee, the Blues' set-piece coach, hollers praise at his goalkeeper from the touchline.

Chelsea 1-0 Brighton

14:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Delay over this Brighton corner as Gusto is spoken to, Gross eventually swings the ball in but Martinez has his near post covered. Joao Pedro with some good defensive work to concede another corner.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

What a start, and the unlikeliest of goalscorers. For all the attacking quality the Blues have in their front three, it's Lavia who nudges over the line as Brighton fail to clear their lines.

Alonso is delighted, and enthusiastically applauds to will his side on.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Brighton | Romeo Lavia ‘4

14:06 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

4 min: CHELSEA LEAD!

It’s a mess from a Brighton perspective as Joao Pedro’s header is saved by Bart Verbruggen but he spills the ball right for Romeo Lavia to nudge home from close range.

Chelsea 0-0 Brighton

14:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

3 min: Looks like it is going to be a long afternoon for Brighton captain Dunk as he comes across to cut out a cross for a corner.

Oli Gent at Stamford Bridge

14:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

As expected - Gusto is being trialled in the middle of the park alongside Romeo Lavia. An interesting selection, with Caicedo, James and Barco all available to Alonso, but he certainly has the engine, as we've seen when he plays at wing-back. Does he have the composure amidst the chaos?

Chelsea 0-0 Brighton

14:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

1 min: Nearly a gift for Chelsea inside the opening minute as Kostoulas gives the ball away in a dangerous area but Rogers can’t pick out the run of Pedro.

Why Martinez can make Chelsea debut today

13:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

While Emi Martinez’s move was announced on the day of Chelsea’s Premier League fixture at home to Brighton, Xabi Alonso has handed his summer signing an immediate debut.

For Martinez to have been eligible to make his debut against Brighton, he had to have been registered by Friday's 12pm BST deadline.

Clearly, the Blues met the deadline.

There are five former Brighton players in Chelsea's squad today, and that doesn't feel like many considering the sheer amount of business these two clubs have done between them in recent years.

Two start this afternoon, with Joao Pedro leading the line for the hosts after his electric performance against Fulham last time out.

Levi Colwill skippers the side, but he has a lot to thank Brighton for after he had a superb loan spell in Sussex in the 2022-23 season.

On the bench, Barco is another, arriving at Stamford Bridge via Strasbourg, while Danny Welbeck is the latest to have made the jump.

Moises Caicedo is the most expensive to have moved to the capital from the Amex, costing the Blues £115million back in 2023.

Fernandez absence explained

13:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Fernandez was left out of Chelsea’s matchday squad again as doubts remain over his future at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine missed out of the Blues’ Carabao Cup win over Luton in midweek, with manager Xabi Alonso explaining that the midfielder was omitted as it was “better for the team”, rather than anything linked to the transfer interest in him.

Standard Sport has reported previously that Manchester City maintain an interest in the 25-year-old, who was booed by both Chelsea and Fulham fans in the west London derby on Monday evening.

Now, he has been left out entirely of Sunday’s encounter with Brighton and Hove Albion, with Romeo Lavia and Malo Gusto starting in the engine room of Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 shape.

Martinez shirt number revealed

13:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea have confirmed Emi Martinez’s shirt number after the completion of his transfer from Aston Villa, and it’s an iconic selection.

The Argentina goalkeeper officially joined the Blues on Sunday after a deal for £7.5million was agreed with Villa earlier in the week.

Martinez’s move is somewhat of a surprise considering Chelsea’s stance all summer had been that they were content with the goalkeepers they have in Robert Sanchez and Mike Penders.

David Datro Fofana and Caleb Wiley have become the latest players to leave Chelsea before the transfer deadline.

The Blues have been focused on trimming their large first-team squad before the summer window closes for business at 11pm BST on Tuesday night (September 1).

Standard Sport understands that striker Fofana has now sealed a move to Swiss side Servette FC, while left-back Wiley has joined Preston.

Fofana’s is a permanent transfer worth an initial €2.5million (£2.1m) plus a further €1m (£856,000) in add-ons, while Wiley heads back to the Championship on a season-long loan.

Chelsea have identified Lamine Camara as a possible replacement for Manchester City target Enzo Fernandez.

Standard Sport understands the Blues are considering making an opening offer for the Monaco midfielder, and remain interested in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Camara is understood to be open to a Premier League move this summer.

The Senegal star has also been linked with a move to Liverpool and was the subject for a rejected bid, worth around £43million, from Crystal Palace earlier in the summer.

Emi Martinez reveals why he has joined Chelsea

12:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Emi Martinez has completed his move to Chelsea, though he will not feature against Brighton this afternoon.

Standard Sport reported during the week that Chelsea had agreed a £7.5million deal with Aston Villa to upgrade their goalkeeping options, with Martinez expected to become Xabi Alonso’s No1.

Standard Sport understands the move came about after the Blues were offered Martinez by intermediaries and the Argentina international communicated to the club that he was keen on joining.

The 33-year-old has got his wish with his move being announced on Sunday morning, saying it was an “easy decision” to join Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez has lost 'the desire' to play for Chelsea

12:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Xabi Alonso has suggested that Enzo Fernandez has lost “the desire” to play for Chelsea.

Fernandez was again missing for Chelsea as Luton were beaten 2-0 in the Carabao Cup second round on Thursday night, having also been absent from the squad for the win over Fulham in the Premier League three days prior.

The Argentine is again expected to sit out Sunday’s game against Brighton.

Fernandez is the subject of interest from Manchester City, who are expected to test Chelsea’s resolve with a formal bid before Tuesday’s summer transfer deadline.

Predicted Chelsea XI

12:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Robert Sanchez looks set to lose his place as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper now that the Blues have signed 33-year-old Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.

Mike Penders made his Chelsea debut against Luton as Sanchez remained on the bench.

Xabi Alonso says he has decided who will start in goal against Brighton, but was not willing to reveal the answer.

Cole Palmer played the full 90 minutes against Luton, perhaps surprisingly, but Alonso dismissed suggestions it meant the player would be rested against Brighton.

He is in line to start alongside Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro as Chelsea’s front three continues to bed in.

After Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix led the charge against Fulham, it was the turn of Valentin Barco, Mike Penders and Danny Welbeck against Luton Town on Thursday night to be handed starts on their Chelsea debuts.

And all five passed those tests, most with flying colours. The latest exhibition of Chelsea first-timers might have twisted their manager’s arm in time for them to be given heightened roles in this afternoon’s testing home match against top-of-the-table (after only one game) Brighton.

Against Luton, Mike Penders admittedly had a quiet debut, keeping a no-doubt cherished clean sheet but with barely anything to do all evening besides distributing the ball.

But with Chelsea agreeing to sign Emi Martinez for £7.5million and Robert Sanchez axed as No1, Penders will feel he is well placed to preserve his starting berth in goal for the visit of the Seagulls. He would be busier against them than he was against Jack Wilshere’s Luton, of that there is no doubt.

Chelsea are back at Stamford Bridge for the first time in the Premier League since beating Tottenham in their final home game of the 2025-26 season on May 19.

The Blues, overall, struggled here last season, winning just seven times at home in the league and that will be something Xabi Alonso has to fix.

Chelsea team news: Caicedo doubtful

11:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Moises Caicedo ahead of Sunday’s match against Brighton.

Xabi Alonso is hoping Caicedo can return to make his first appearance of the season in the Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Caicedo suffered an injury last week in training which saw him miss wins over Fulham and Luton Town.

But Alonso has said: “He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made.”
