Chelsea vs AC Milan LIVE: Friendly result and latest updates as Blues record big win

Chelsea vs AC Milan LIVE

Joao Pedro struck twice and Moises Caicedo added a stunning third as Chelsea swept aside AC Milan 3-0 in Jakarta. The opening half was short on quality, with Milan making the brighter start before Chelsea gradually found their rhythm. Pedro remained the Blues’ biggest threat and finally broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, powering a header into the net from a corner.

Chelsea needed less than a minute after the restart to double their lead. Pedro reacted sharply to Pedro Neto’s free-kick, sweeping home from close range to put the result firmly in Chelsea’s hands. Milan made eight changes at half-time, but their reshuffled side struggled to cope with the pace and intensity.

Caicedo then delivered the highlight of the afternoon, smashing a superb volley into the net from the edge of the box after another corner. Chelsea never looked like surrendering their advantage, comfortably seeing out the closing stages. For Alonso, it was an emphatic and encouraging performance. Nicoll-Jazuli and Quenda impressing

11:37 , Alex Young

Results in pre-season are often overstated, and while Alonso will have learned a few lessons, there have also been plenty of positives so far.

Chief among those has been the rise of 16-year-old midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who impressed on his first senior start against Juventus.

The Sydney-born England youth international was selected ahead of both Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo to partner Moises Caicedo as Alonso put his faith in the Cobham graduate.

Geovany Quenda was another who impressed in an otherwise flat Chelsea performance, with the 19-year-old winger proving he is ready to make an immediate impact following his £40million move from Sporting.

Familiar faces

11:25 , Alex Young

AC Milan have the likes of ex-Chelsea quartet Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Christopher Nkunku in their current ranks.

They come into this game on the back of consecutive draws with Celtic and arch-rivals Inter, with a clash against Manchester United coming up in Poland next weekend and their Serie A curtain-raiser away at Torino on August 23.

Chelsea vs AC Milan prediction

11:04 , Alex Young

There has not been too much for Chelsea fans to get excited about so far this summer, on the pitch at least, and there will be some pushing for Xabi Alonso to show them something more after two underwhelming defeats, and one barmy 10-goal thriller.

AC Milan have played out draws with Celtic and Inter Milan so far this summer, and another draw feels like a fair prediction.

Chelsea 1-1 AC Milan

AC Milan team news

10:56 , Alex Young

Milan forward Christopher Nkunku is set to face former club Chelsea for the first time since leaving West London last August. Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also feature against their old side, while Christian Pulisic remains sidelined with a thigh injury.

Mario Gila is unavailable after suffering an injury on his debut but could return for Milan’s Serie A opener against Torino on August 23.

Lorenzo Torriani is expected to continue in goal with Mike Maignan still absent. Goncalo Ramos could make his first start after debuting off the bench.

Rafael Leao and Luka Modric may also feature as they continue building their fitness, although both could be eased back into action gradually.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Penders; Palestra, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Lavia, Caicedo; Estevao, Palmer, Mudryk; Joao Pedro

Chelsea team news

10:42 , Alex Young

Robert Sanchez returned from injury against Juventus, but competition for Chelsea’s No.1 spot remains open with young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders pushing for a start against AC Milan.

Xabi Alonso will also hope Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer are fit after both were rested as a precaution in midweek.

Chelsea’s defensive uncertainty has been evident during pre-season, making Colwill’s return particularly important after his ACL injury.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli impressed on his first senior start, while Geovany Quenda also caught the eye.

With two matches in 24 hours, Alonso is expected to rotate heavily, fielding a stronger side against Milan before changes against Johor Darul Ta'zim.

Chelsea vs AC Milan

10:29 , Alex Young

Chelsea this afternoon are back in pre-season action with a friendly against AC Milan in Indonesia.

The Blues were beaten by Juventus in Hong Kong earlier this week, and are looking to avoid a third straight pre-season defeat having also lost to Tottenham.

There were some reasons to be positive from the defeat to the Old Lady, but Xabi Alonso will want to see far more against another Italian opposition.

A familiar face will be sitting in the opposition dugout, with ex-Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim now in charge of the the Rossoneri.
