Chelsea remain one of the most powerful clubs in world football, financially, after Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium completed a £4billion takeover at Stamford Bridge last year. The Blues spent close to £300million in the summer transfer window and have already reached half of that total in the January window.
Mykhailo Mudryk became Boehly's most expensive transfer signing since he became co-owner with the 22-year-old completing an £88million transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. Mudyrk is the fifth arrival in January, joining the likes of David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix.
Graham Potter is taking the opportunity this month to strengthen his squad and add players that fit into his tactics and play style after inheriting Thomas Tuchel's squad just days after the summer window closed. More signings are expected before the January transfer window closes with Chelsea targeting a new central midfielder and right wing-back.

The Blues' total transfer spend since Boehly took charge in west London comes to £436million so far, taking into account all loan fees and achievable add-ons, as per Swiss Ramble. This figure could quite easily reach the £500million mark come the end of the month if Chelsea look to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Denzel Dumfries from Inter, with both being heavily linked with switches to Stamford Bridge.
The west Londoners' spending power is stark for all to see. Chelsea have spent £150million on new signings this month alone which is over triple the amount that the Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and LaLiga have spent combined (£44.6m). The Blues have always been able to compete financially in the transfer market since Roman Abramovich became owner back in 2003 - now Boehly has taken on the mantle to continue leading Chelsea as one of wealthiest and competitive clubs in world football.
The money spent by the American co-owner also highlights the sheer size of the task facing Boehly and Potter to rebuild the Blues. It could be argued that a few of the new signings made in the summer have not worked out already, meaning more investment is needed into the playing squad.
The new vision implemented by Boehly at Stamford Bridge will also be a factor to their huge spending total. Chelsea are now focusing on signing talented youngsters that can develop into world-class players whilst having an impact on the first team upon their arrival - as shown with Wesley Fofana and Mudryk.
These types of players will tend to have inflated fees given their potential and talent. It remains to be seen whether this model is sustainable, especially if the Blues are to miss out on Champions League football next season.
