Chelsea told Graham Potter attribute that could channel Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger plan

The swing needed by Chelsea as a footballing organisation is defined by one stat. Only Jose Mourinho has lasted longer than Graham Potter's reign at Brighton in the last 20 years.

The feeling coming from Stamford Bridge is that the new owners desperately want this to change. They want a manager to become the face of the club for years to come and to create the pathway for future success. It's a wish that lots of clubs want and the Blues themselves have tried to do it before.

Roman Abramovich's Chelsea in the early 2010s became a journey to win the Champions League and even the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as a long term option didn't stop his demands for immediate success, even if there was hope of longer-term and more sustained achievements.

Frank Lampard was also in place to do that, though like with Villas-Boas, the patience at his lack of experience soon wore off. That's why Tuchel's blend of skills, tactical nous and class was meant to be the page turner for Chelsea.

Instead, the desire for a coach to stamp his name on the club has now led to Potter's appointment. A man with history of progression at all of his previous sides and with the current Premier League acumen to be a promising and exciting choice by Todd Boehly.

Having played under Potter and also some of the league's greatest manager's including Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, Brighton striker Danny Welbeck was coy in the past on comparing the Englishman to the two legends, but did say: "Every manager has their own way of doing things and he wants success and he wants to win.

"If you look at the way the team is playing and how we are going into matches there is no stone left unturned on what he wants us to do out there on the pitch."

Potter spent seven years at Ostersunds in Sweden, where he made his name with three promotions in seven years and took the relative minnows to the domestic cup as well. Albeit on a different level of attention and quality to the Premier League, it is an impressive CV that demonstrates his ability to manage throughout a club and expand upon a vision once appointed.

This is the hope at Stamford Bridge. It's a big call and a big step up, but for Chelsea to truly break free off their short-term curse, channelling Ferguson and Wenger through Potter is a place to start.
