Chelsea takeover: Saudi consortium latest to show interest in buying club from Roman Abramovich

The private consortium Saudi Media have registered their interest in purchasing Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

The group, which works across media, advertising and sporting brands, registered an interest on Sunday to buy the west London club, as first reported by Goal.

Chelsea are reluctant to sell the club to a group that has political or geographical ties that could be considered problematic.

Newcastle United were bought by a Saudi-based consortium last year and the Premier League club were widely criticised because of the Middle East country's poor human rights record.

Abramovich announced last week that he would be selling Chelsea after calls for him to be sanctioned in parliament by a number of MPs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 55-year-old vehemently denies any direct links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, though his spokesperson last week said that he was playing an "advocacy" role in orgainising peace talks between the nations.

In a statement last Wednesday, Abramovich said: "I would like to address the speculation in media over the past few days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea FC.

"As I have stated before, I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners.

"The sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club."

Abramovich's asking price is around £3billion and there have been numerous parties interested, including from a consortium led by LA Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss.

A deadline of 15 March for bids to be submitted has been set by Abramovich, with US financial firm the Raine Group looking after the selling process.
